You'll have to pay the travel costs from N. Wales - but sure!

Thanks Noel, you've been of great help!

(So if I make the offer, you'll come replace them right,
ha ha)

Thanks again,

I'd go for the fans or the PSU - they're cheap enough to

replace on
suspicion, if you're handy with a screwdriver (or know

someone who is - it's

Ran DocMemory, came up as PASS on all counts. Does this
narrow is to an overheating problem?

Still looking to beg on knees for a new system!! Or
should I be begging for a new fan?

Thanks for the info!
Dana
-----Original Message-----
This is almost certainly overheating or faulty RAM
try DocMemory - www.simmtester.com - download it,

create
the boot disk, and
run it overnight - see what it reports.

Headlines following day.. "police seeking wide-

grinned
individual in connection with stolen PC from
manufacturer"

Let me summarize my dilemma to perhaps narrow down

the
causes:
*Windows ME, running on Compaq Presario Suffers From:
The whole system randomly restarts. Not when doing
anything in particular. There is no consistency

between
the time lapses of restarts either.
*In addition to randomly restarting, it will
automatically
restart when attempting to load Windows Media Player.
*Additionally, when it is running, it will close out
programs randomly. No particular consistency to which
programs or when this occurs either.

I have run, all suggested adware removal, malware,
hijack
virus removal programs recommended. In fact I have
scanned
the system with various programs multiple times now.
I have opened up the PC case, which has remained

open,
vacuumed out, in order to prevent possible

overheating
scenarios. All fans appear to be running effectively.
*Note there is no sensor in order to detect CPU
temperature sensor apparent by checking through

AIDA32
software. Nor do I see any red flag indications when
running in Safe Mode and looking at the Device

Manager.

*Last but not least, this PC has been doing this for
months, however, less frequently than now. Since I

have
taken it over, it seems to have in increased.

Thanks for your previous help and any future
suggestions!

Hmm - I can see the headlines....
"Second-story Compaq hits deck - police are looking

for
someone with a
mile-wide grin on their face!"

Maybe I misunderstood your first post?
I thought you were saying the individual programs

were
shutting down, rather
than the whole system?

from your response now, it looks like it's the whole
system, in which case
we're back to looking for hardware and/or driver
problems.

Check the CPU temperatures if you can (AIDA32 or
Everest
Home Edition can
give you a readout, if there's a sensor installed)
Check that the fans are running freely, and that

your
vents aren't blocked
by dust-bunnies - or towelsg
Reboot to Safe Mode - open Device Manager, and have

a
look there for
error-flagged or duplicated devices - the usual
culprits
being the Graphics
and/or sound devices.

Noel,
After running all of these various programs,
exhausting
my
resources for malware, or other various viruses or
spyware, I've come up empty handed. It appears my
system
is "clean".

However it is still restarting at random. The only
thing
consistent is that I can also get it to reboot
everytime I
attempt to load Windows Media Player. Indication

of a
bad
video card perhaps?

Or is this a trend or specific problem linked to
Compaq

Any thoughts or advice short of letting my

computer
glide
off the second story balcony would be greatly
appreciated!
Thanks!

Randomly shutting down individual programs? -

that'd
be a
new one for an
overheating problem, AFAIK!
More likely is that something's slipped over the
fences,
and you have a
malware attack.

You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make
sure
that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-
avert/stinger.exe

- update your virus scanner and run a full system
scan
of
all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to

remove
variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.merijn.org/files/cwshredder.zip
http://www.merijn.org/files/CWShredder.exe

http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads...CWShredder.exe

http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/CWShredder.zip

download AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com,

install,
update, and run it to
remove spyware, adware,
and other such nasties from your system.

I've recently obtained a office computer, thats
been
upgraded from Win 98 to Win ME. It restarts
itself,
for
no particular reason. There is no correlation

to
the
activity going on, and there has always been

virus
protection programs running along with adware
removal
programs.

I realize this may be due to an overheating
problem
with
the system and cleaning and opening the case

may
assist
with it.

However, it is now starting to shut down

programs
randomly. For instant Yahoo Msgr, or Word. Is

this
due
to
overheating also?
Thanks for the info!
