KB911562 UPDATE
Hi Mike,
I will try the KB912812 install again as you suggest with NAV disabled. When I do this, I will let you know. In regard to KB911562 issue. YES YES YES simply installing MDAC 2.8 SP1 resolved the script errors in my HP Scanjet 3970 software (HP Director) !!! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. I informed HP Tech Support (via Chat) that they initially pointed me to the wrong version of MDAC 2.8 (they pointed me to the version dataed 8/4/03). I also told them that they need not have customers uninstall their scanner software prior to installing MDAC 2.8 SP1. Also, I have a contact in HP Quality Care support and I called him direct to let him know of what I learned from you. He was very thankful for he did not realize that there was a SP1 so he will store that in his bag of tricks. And I let him know about Component Checker utility and that customers don't have to uninstall their scanner software. Can you make a recommendation for a replacement to NAV? Thank you again!!!! ~ K "Mike M" wrote: Kath, No reply other than to say I'm sorry but I am unable to support those using NAV other than to urge them dump it and use an AV application that actually works with Win Me rather than destroying the system. I would nevertheless strongly urge you to uninstall 912812 (or use system restore and roll back to a checkpoint created before you first installed this patch) and then try download again and reinstall 912812 but this time with NAV disabled for the entire duration of the download and install. Ah I see you have already uninstalled 912812 so you can ignore the first part of the paragraph above. Because of your reply regarding the Kernel32.DLL errors, I may have not been clear regarding my anomaly. It is KB912812 that is somehow causing the KERNEL32.DLL errors. I initially talked with Manju of Windows ME technical support on 4/17/06 regarding my sporadic "I.E. has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL" errors upon close of I.E. She advised at that time to disable my Norton AV whenever installing an update. After my call to her, I disabled Norton AV and re-installed KB912812 - but the errors continued. Although it is not clear in my notes, I believe I installed KB912812 over the top (in other words, I did not back out the KB912812 that I initially installed with my Norton AV having been ENABLED). Thus I had this scenario: Installed KB912812 with Norton AV enabled. Encountered KERNEL32.DLL messages. Called MS support. Disabled Norton AV. Installed KB912812. Errors continued. I backed out KB912812 a couple of days ago via use of the Control Panel - Add/Remove programs and I no longer get the KERNEL32.DLL errors. Do you think/know that we can't re-install an update without first backing out the same update, such as described above with KB912812. At the time, I did not think I needed to first uninstall KB912812 prior to re-installing it again. As an aside, up until the other day, I never disabled Norton AV prior to doing the MS updates - and I guess I have been fortunate to not experience any adverse fallout over the years. Thanks for your help and I await your reply. |

KB911562 UPDATE
Kathie,
Make sure you get the right version. The 912812 hotfix is for all systems running IE6 SP1 and IE6 SP2. See KB912812 "MS06-013: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=912812) and look at the section "Applies To" at the bottom of the page and you will see: APPLIES TO •Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1, when used with: Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server Microsoft Windows 2000 Datacenter Server Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Edition Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition snip -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows [2001-2006] Kathie wrote: Hi again Mike, I see for KB912812 the following: System Requirements Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000 Service Pack 4; Windows XP Service Pack 1 This update applies to Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1) with the following operating systems: Windows XP SP1 Windows 2000 SP4 I am using WindowsME and I know I need to install KB912812. KB911562 UPDATE
Thanks for the feedback Kathie and I'm pleased to read that your HP
scanjet software is now working as it should. Can you make a recommendation for a replacement to NAV? Well, I've seen too much damage caused to Win Me caused by running Symantec software with LiveUpdate being perhaps the worst of the bunch. As for alternatives there are plenty to choose from although a couple of them do have slight downsides. Products I would suggest you have a look at include: Avast! (www.avast.com). Free and paid for. Note that Avast currently inhibits the creation of automatic system restore checkpoints so you will have to remember to make these manually. AVG (www.grisoft.com and http://free.grisoft.com) both free and paid for eTrust EZAV from Computer Associates. For a free one year offer see http://store.digitalriver.com/DRHM/S...PCtrialUS.html NOD32 (http://nod32.softwaresecuritysolutions.com/) Panda (www.pandasoftware.com) etc. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows [2001-2006] Kathie wrote: Hi Mike, I will try the KB912812 install again as you suggest with NAV disabled. KB911562 UPDATE
Thanks Mike for the information.
Another question!!! When I get the notification (globe symbol in system tray) and click on it to take me to the windows update site; and have the scan performed; the site knows which version to install on my PC? I have been using this functionality as opposed to my manually searching for the update. Your information is excellent, since I could easily download the incorrect update had I searched manually for it. I will await your reply, confirming most likely what I believe to be true: using the windows update site, it will know which update to use. KB911562 UPDATE
the site knows which version to install on my PC?
Kathie, In a word, yes. Not that there haven't occasionally been problems with updates, the 911562 update for MDAC 2.8 being a prime example. KB911562 UPDATE
Hi Mike,
As you know, I was successful yesterday in the install of KB911562. However, today, I had the notification of needing a windows update. I erred in how I clicked on the globe in the system tray, and the update launched. This was for KB911562 - and I got a successful install message. I went to the MS update site to check on installation history, and it shows a failed status for KB911562 today (automatic update) and yesterday's install of KB911562 shows successful status (web). I am very puzzled. I looked in control panel, add/remove programs, and don't see KB911562 nor do I see it when I do "about I.E.". Pearls of wisdom, once again? And I thought I was out of the woods. And since the re-install of KB912812 last night at 11:16PM, I have not had any Kernel32.DLL errors. I will keep my fingers crossed on this one. Thanks! ~ K "Mike M" wrote: the site knows which version to install on my PC? Kathie, In a word, yes. KB911562 UPDATE
Hello Mike,
I want to give you further information regarding the automatic update that I wrote previously to you about, for which I have yet to receive a reply. As of now, 4/27/06, the status of my system according to the Windows update site indicates "There are no critical updates available at this time." As I mentioned to you, I got a successful install message at my desktop for the "automatic update" for KB911562 on 4/26/06. However, when I went to the Windows update site and viewed my installation history, it shows that this failed (source: automatic update). I want to note the descrition: "Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 (KB911562)" Whereby, on 4/25/06, the installation history shows there was a successful update (source: web site) and note the description: "Security Update for Microsoft Data Access Components 2.8 Service Pack 1 (KB911562) " Comments? And to recap previous posts of this thread, I installed on 4/25/06 MDAC 2.8 SP1 and then installed KB911562 in order to allow my HP scanner software to function correctly (without script errors). As the installation history shows, KB911562's source was from web site. I do not find any reference to KB911562 in control panel, add/remove programs nor in "about I.E.". Is this normal? Looking forward to your pearls of wisdom. Thank you! ~ K "Mike M" wrote: the site knows which version to install on my PC? Kathie, In a word, yes. KB911562 UPDATE
Kathie
The update status WRT the MDAC updates is perfectly as expected in your circumstances. The update is not a patch for IE, and therefore won't appear in the AboutIE listing. Updates do not always appear in the Add/Remove listing - usually because such updates are not designed to be removable, for a number of (good) reasons. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Kathie" wrote in message ...
