Shane, I have to ask why you've got to ask why Harry feels a need to ask ???
ct Shane wrote: Harry, I've got to ask: why do you feel a need to delete a 211KB file? Basically, they're not duplicates. One is the copy of the updated file - the backup. The other is the original version, in it's .cab file. You mustn't start trying to delete files from within the cabs. Shane "webster72n" wrote in message ... Noel: If I may, I have three of these files (smgr.dll) present, one system and two options files, all the same with 211 KB's. Is it ok to delete one of the options files, since they seem to be duplicates? The version is up-to-date. Harry. "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... It's possible that you haven't installed the System Restore Patch - without which any current restore points are just space fillers. To check this, look for the file C:\Windows\System\SMGR.DLL - r-click on the file, and select Properties. What's the version number? - if it's v4.90.0.3003 then you have installed the patch, and we have to look elsewhere for the problem if it's v4.90.0.2533, then you need to install the patch. To install the patch, either visit Windows Update, or go here, and download the patch for offline install http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;Q290700 Run the installer, and windows should reset System Restore at the same time, clearing your old restore points (which wouldn't have worked, anyhow), and creating a single new one. You should then reset the maximum allocation for SR by going to the adjustment slider at System Properties | Performance | File System | Hard Disk - most people find that 200-400MB is quite sufficient for most purposes, unless installing/uninstalling large applications such as Office. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "bonifacia" wrote in message ... i tried numerous times to do a system restore ... it shuts down before it finishes then it restarts , but unable to restore. tried numerous times. now i don't have system restore within system tools.? but a system restore icon appeared on my desktop... i then clicked the sr icon and the same thing... no restore point. |

Sounds like your SR archive is hosed - the actual space used is greater than
the allocation. This is often caused by attempting to reset System Restore without rebooting IMMEDIATELY after checking/unchecking the disable option. You'll have to do a proper reset of SR - To Reset System Restore - System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and check "Disable System Restore", Apply and IMMEDIATELY reboot. This will flush you restore folder and erase all checkpoints, then, System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable System Restore", Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot. This should now automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following the restart. Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder, System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore slider to your preferred setting. Most people find that a setting of 200-300MB is sufficient to hold 10-15 days worth of restore points, unless you are doing a lot of installs/uninstalls, or installing large applications (such as Office). -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "bonifacia" wrote in message ... no. i am not running norton. it was removed months ago. there was no prior attempt on my part to reset sr, which would have required
rebooting immediately ..as you pointed out. as i pointed the sr bar did not complete before it automatically rebooted itself. i followed your directions as posted. on the last part setting the slider it was either 200 or 460. couldn't set it to 300mb. and no i rarely do uninstalls/installs at home. i checked programs/accessories/system tools . found no system restore there. it remains a desktop icon. would i now require to use sr only from desktop. it has always been in system tools. thanks. again.. as i pointed out 6/25 this started when i wanted to use system
restore and the bar never completed when the computer would reboot itself-result no restoration . after several attempts to use system restore going back 2-3 days only i decided to post the question as to why this is occuring and why all of the sudden sytem restore was not in system tools but rather on the desktop. how and why system restore is on the desktop, i am cautious that it was i who mistakenly / accidently put it there. your solution is easy copy it back. so the question is how to place system restore back into system tools ? open question. "Noel Paton" wrote: Sounds like your SR archive is hosed - the actual space used is greater than the allocation. Maybe you don't have enough disk space allocated to system restore. That will shut it down (with no explanation, I think). Try Help, System Restore. "bonifacia" wrote in message ... i tried numerous times to do a system restore ... it shuts down before it finishes then it restarts , but unable to restore. tried numerous times. now i don't have system restore within system tools.? but a system restore icon appeared on my desktop... i then clicked the sr icon and the same thing... no restore point. |
