Default PC screen and graphics weird

For unknown reason(s) my home computer running Windows 98 2nd edition with
updates, has a screen appearance which is enlarged: both online and desktop
views. The graphics are poor now also. A par5ticular window no longer fits
onto the screen because it's too big and the print is hard to read. I
already have the font size "smallest."
It will enter safe mode for unknown reasons and doesn't give me the "restore
my desktop" option so I have re-boot.
Please help.

Hi,

First, have you rebooted\restarted since the problem developed?

Then...
Go to Control PanelDisplay; then click the setting tab.

Are the settings at least...
Color: 256 colors.

Resolution(Screen Area): 800x600.

If not, set them to that. Click Apply. Any improvement?

If so, you can make further adjustments by increasing the colors to 16
or 32 bit, if available, as well as increase the resolution. Also, if
you notice a slight flickering of the screen, click the Advanced button,
then the Adapter tab and check the refresh rate. Check your monitor's
documentation for acceptable settings.

If you are unable to change those settings, then the next step is to
reinstall the video drivers. Post back for help with that.

would it make sense to reinstall video drivers?

Only if the display isn't working properly. You could visit the video
adapter manufacturer's site and see if there is an update available, but
you have to be 100% certain that you download the correct drivers or
you'll end up in a nasty circle of installing/changing drivers.

Adapter default is usually OK, and optimal should be "safe" for your
monitor also.
