Antivirus

There is nothing wrong with 'Avast' and it is quite recommendable.
If you screw up your registry, it is your fault and noone else's.
Mike gave you instructions on how to fix your mistake and there's no need
whatsoever to 'suck up to him'. He simply has the knowledge.
And 'SGB' didn't look 'female' to me, therefore the assumption, with my
apologies.
Regardless whether you'll listen to it or not, my recommendation is to make
Avast work. To create one's own System CheckPoints doesn't present a problem
at all.
I should be the one laughing, but instead I'm enjoying a smooth working
machine.

Last I heard, Joan (and I don't need it anymore, having gone for the two
year three licence deal on NOD32, so haven't checked in months) is that
Grisoft had extended support for 7.5 until Dec 31st. That change was too
late, here, and anyway I'd never trust Grisoft again. I remember thinking,
myself, that 7.5 was about to end, and that 8.0 was no longer free, thanks
to the pop-up spam they sent. Others with less computer savvy than you and I
bought 8.0 before finding out that a free version was still available. And,
for chrissake, AVG 8.0 retail costs more than NOD32!

However, Avast! is not very good. For free it is better than nothing and
free or not it is better than Norton and McAfee, but it doesn't do
particularly well in tests that reflect the real world. It requires
responsible surfing and clicking too - but then they all do, don't they.

probably justifiably so, but AVG (7.xx) had always done well on my

Thanks Shane, I haven't bothered looking but as I said that machine is only
really turned on about once a week to keep it up to date so will keep an eye
out for when it finishes being updated and find another one for WinME. The
machine does get used occasionally by John when he wants to transfer photo's
from Photobucket to one of his forums, the guinea pig ones, so I do have to
make sure it works OK g

I deleted it here (though not for the first time, much in the same way Bilbo
wished he was back in his comfy hobbit hole). I just wish I could remember
for once and for all that I *don't need Millennium any more!* Truth to tell
