Default Windows Media Player

Ever since I downloaded a new version of windows media
player, it does not work. When I try to play something by
clicking on "listen now" on a radio station website, for
example, a message pops up that says: Windows Media Player
cannot play this file. Connect to the Internet or insert
the removable media on which the file is located, and then
try to play the file again.
I just tried re-downloading WindowsMedia 9, but it still
doesn't work!?!

Any ideas?
