Default Win98Se Shutdown Problem

Whenever I Shut down Win98 SE the shutdown process occurs normally, but the
"It is safe to Turn off your computer" message does not appear and the LED
indicating that the hard drive is being accessed, is on.It shows me no
warnings of an improper shutdown when I startup. What could be the problem.

It's normal for that message to not appear when the machine is capable of
powering itself down. Modern machines with ATX power supply and ACPI enabled
will shut down completely, all by themselves.

It is normal for the HD light to be on until the system actually shuts down.
Lots of stuff is getting written to the drive during shutdown.

I don't understand what your problem is.

Hi Gary,
The problem is that the LED light does not go out even if I
don't turn off the power for a lot of time. I fear that my hard drive will
get damaged if I turn off the power when the hard drive is being written to.

You're sure the LED is for the HD?

The LED stays lit even after the system shuts itself down?

I realize, now, that perhaps the system *isn't* shutting itself down? That it
shows a blank screen, the HD LED is lit, *AND* the system remains powered up?

Do I have it right this time, s?

Operating on the assumption that I finally *do* have the problem understood. The
first thing I would do is trouble-shoot using MSCONFIG. See the first article
below for those instructions. They are part of a much larger set of procedures,
but you might as well do them, anyway. Once a Clean Boot is established, after
restarting, then shut down and see what happens.

The Security! article contains what would be my next set of suggestions.

"Clean Boot--What it is and why you need it."

Hi Gary....
I don't exactly know whether the system isn't shutting down
because i don't get any improper shutdown error message on next startup.
When I do StartShutdownShutdown the "Windows is shutting
down" screen comes and then the screen goes blank with the LED lit. and the
LED is the hard drive LED indicator.

But you eventually press the On/Off button and it finishes shutting down, right?
My last message contains my suggestions for t-shooting this, at least to start

If I may offer a quick observation, it has been my experience
that a constant HD LED display is usually indicative of an
improper data cable issue or an improper jumper setting
on either the master HD or the slave drive (HD or Optical Drive).
