reinstalling 98se???
gigabyte socket A MB ga-7zxe
amd 950 duron 2 newer cd drive-1 burner agp 32 meg video card onboard sound Had some major problems I couldn't correct plus system was really loaded down so---. Reformatted a 40gig HD. format c: /s When I start to reload WIN98se, the system hangs at " Windows 98 setup" screen (setup is preparing the win98 setup wizard-----). The first time I tried to reload it hung at ~ 32%. Push reset button and now it's hung at ~ 5 % and floppy light is solid green. Any suggestions please, PS Before posting, tried again and changed the win98 cd to the other cd player. Locked up at 13% with no lights on. Should I replace the "newer" cd player with an older 24x I have and try it? |

What I'd try is to boot to the floppy Startup disk, with CDROM support, and
run the following (assumes your CDROM drive is E:\. Edit if necessary.) Press Enter at the end of each line. Pay attention to spaces and punctuation. c: md WIN98 e: cd win98 copy *.* c:\win98 That will put all the necessary files onto your hard drive. It will also tell you if the problem is not being able to read files from the CD. If you get errors, then you should try replacing the drive. But it may also be due to the CD itself being scratched or otherwise damaged. If scratches are suspected, wipe the CD with a soft cloth using radial strokes (from the center of the CD to the outer edge) not in a circular motion. Also, I've seen good results from using car wax to polish the CD surface (the side opposite the label.) Lastly, if the label side is scratched deeply, the CD may simply be worthless now. That's the side the data actually resides on. If the Copy operation goes well, then remove the floppy disk and reboot. At the C:\ prompt, type: md win98 setup If you still have problems, then report back with details. -- Gary S. FDISK sets up partitions. Once partitions are set up, you format them. Then
you can use them. Sounds to me like you've no need for FDISK. Believe me, if there are problems with your partitioning or boot records, you usually get error messages early on. But if there's nothing on your system that you need to keep, using FDISK to delete all partitions and then recreate what you need is a good idea. You'd do well to use more than one partition. 8GB (maximum) for the system partition (C:\) and then others for data storage. My typical arrangement is 8GB for C:\, 2-4 GB for D:\ which I reserve for TEMP and Temporary Internet Files (TIF) and other temp uses, then divvy up the rest for personal documents (like My Documents and Outlook Express stores, etc.) still using the 8GB limit for efficiency. Larger partitions can be created for multimedia files and downloaded stuff like AV installation files, etc. If you post back and tell us what your primary usage is (what you mostly use the machine for), I can suggest ways to go about it. Unless you want to multi-boot (have more than one operating system on the machines that you can switch between) you should only create C:\ as a Primary Partition. The rest of the drive is then used to create an Extended Partition, and then that Extended Partition is divvied up into Volumes (D:\, E:\, F:\, etc.) I can also tell you how to move TEMP, TIF, My Documents, etc., and you'll also do well to immediately change the CD drive(s) letter(s) to way down the alphabet, like X:\ and Y:\ (there's good reasons for it) and then use REGEDIT to make the few necessary changes to accommodate that move. Getting volatile data (TEMP and TIF) out of C:\ will help improve reliability immensely. Getting personal documents out of C:\ will make it easier to repair or replace the Windows installation in the future, and still retain your personal files. -- Gary S. This older system is used primarily for back up storage for my main system
AND, just in case, our systems goes down. My wifes system blew a power supply last month and this old one filled in real nice for a couple of days. What I've been doing lately is "playing" with it. I had a 16 meg video card(AGP) that went out, replaced it with an old 8 meg PCI card I had in a "supply box" until I got a replacement(32 meg AGP I took out of my wifes system and installed a new 64 meg card in her system). Now I can't get the system to stay "on" unless I leave the PCI card in a slot but I plug the monitor into the AGP Nvidia card. If I go into BOIS at startup, the monitor stays on but as soon as I try to go further, it shuts down. A friend says I have a bad AGP slot but why would it stay on during startup and BIOS screen? I set BIOS to "fail safe" setting. That's one thing that started the reformat/reload. Now it's all messed up but I can't see getting rid of the system. SO, it's a tool to learn on and man am I learning, more patience than anything, but also a good standby/backup. L. "Ron Badour" wrote in message ... Fdisk is only run to create or delete partitions. Well, I have to say that FailSafe settings in BIOS are seldom correct. And
I'm not really the person you need to tell you how to set up BIOS correctly and to diagnose the video issue -- at least not right now. Just can't seem to wrap my brain around it. Need sleep... Anyway, you should probably concentrate on those issues at the moment and use my copy-files-to-HDD method to simplify things. When it comes down to it, you can easily resize, move and create/delete partitions without using FDISK and without destroying data -- that is, it can be done after the fact using a tool like BootIt NG. But in your shoes, I'd probably FDISK the thing for now, saying Yes to the large-disk support option, delete the existing partition, reboot, go back and then create an 8 GB Primary Partition (8192MB) to install Win98 to. Leave the rest for later, when you're certain you have a viable system and settings are right. Nothing like installing Windows to make you get those things adjusted properly. -- Gary S. reinstalling 98se???
Again, thanks for the info.

Have a good week-end and set some sleep!! "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... Well, I have to say that FailSafe settings in BIOS are seldom correct. And I'm not really the person you need to tell you how to set up BIOS correctly and to diagnose the video issue -- at least not right now. -- Gary S. "L..." wrote in message ... This older system is used primarily for back up storage for my main system AND, just in case, our systems goes down. If you are satisfied with your existing partitions, do not run fdisk. Thanks for the info. We're going out of town this week-end but will try when I get back Sunday/Monday. Just didn't want you to think I forgot. Do I need to run fdisk before/after formatting? L. "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... What I'd try is to boot to the floppy Startup disk, with CDROM support, and run the following (assumes your CDROM drive is E:\. -- Gary S. |
