Default CD/DVD Rom? - Please help

Hi,

I have had trouble with my D drive. In device manager it says it a Samsung
SD608 DVD ROM but it does not play DVD's. If I put a DVD in the drive it
doesn't even register that there's a disk in. It will accept music and data
CD's and I have tried installing up to date drivers. The strange thing is
that when I got the drivers of the net and tried an install through DOS it
said I don't have any Samsung Hardware installed.

Can someone help, any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Canna.

WindowsMe does not include DVD decoder software, so to play a DVD movie
you'll need to install software to do so.

It's not playing DVDs because you don't have a program for playing DVDs;
usually one's provided with the drive but not always with OEM (whitebox
or no-box) packages which are usually supposed to be sold to computer
manufacturers only.

Those DOS drivers are only for the CD portion to work in DOS (which they
probably already do with the M$ default DOS drivers)

On power DVD it has something that checks the system. I don't know the exact
message because I'm at work at the moment but it said something about my
motherboard not being up to date and something about IDE.

Does this ring any bells?

Perhaps. If the IDE rate isn't high enough, it won't work.

I'm also using Power DVD. What version do you have?

And can you quote exactly what the errors/warnings are, please?

I'd next try cleaning the drive with a standard CD cleaning disc (one you
can buy in any audio shop, not a "multimedia" cleaning disc) - perhaps
several times if the drive is located in a dusty, smoky or dirty area.

Thanks for your reply Bill.

I am using version 2.5.0.0.

When I do a system diagnostic it gives me the following :

"Your motherboard is using an ALi, SiS or VIA series of chipset. We strongly
recommend you to install the IDE or bus master driver that comes with your
motherboard and enable the DMA mode for accessing your DVD-ROM. Not enabling
DMA mode or using an improper IDE driver might either degrade the performance
of PowerDVD or even prevent PowerDVD from properly executing. For more
information about the IDE driver, please visit the web site of your
motherboard vendor."

Thanks,

Canna

I'm on 4.0, so keep that in mind.

When I do a system diagnostic it gives me the following :

"Your motherboard is using an ALi, SiS or VIA series of chipset. We strongly
recommend you to install the IDE or bus master driver that comes with your

I'm assuing that you can read CDs in the drive, right?

If so then...

PowerDVD thinks the IDE interface, at least to your DVD drive, isn't using DMA.
It's probably right. I've tried mine (while troubleshooting a DVD burn problem)
in various modes, and it won't play movies worth a damn in any of the non-DMA
modes. The motherboard itself isn't your problem, but that the proper drivers
to enable features on the board haven't been loaded.

You might try Windows Update and see if any of the driver updates apply. WU has
updates for mine (VIA), but I've got newer ones directly from VIA so I don't use
WU's. The point, however, is that there may be some available that way if you
have trouble getting them from the vendor.

It's also possible that the IDE mode has been locked in BIOS.

With this warning, you'll probably find that it's in one of the PIO or FPIO
modes.

What's the make of the computer? Or, better, the motherboard?

- Bill
