Default printer sharing

My W98 computer is part of a network with XP Home. I am
able to see the XP computer on the network, but unable to
share printer. when i check the printer icon, sharing
option, the share name is identical to all others, but
i'm still unable to print. i tried to re-run add printer
wizard, but it says "Detected ... printer on network",
but where there should be a list of
Model/hardware_address/ip_address/ipx_address, nothing
appears. Therefore, i am unable to complete wizard.
Also, under Settings, Printers, when i check the printer
properties, i don't know where i should
enter "\\computername\printer". ANY SUGGESTIONS?
Thanks in advance

Avoid the hassle.
Get a cheap print server and put it directly on the network.

The permissions probably don't match. For instance, as I recall,
allowing "Everyone" access just means that if somebody named
"Everyone" logs in, he can use it. You need to let an account
that is common to both machines have access, and then log in as
that account.

But like I said, instead of spending hour after hour trying to get
it to work, spend a few bucks on something that won't break the
next time they issue a critical update. Then when you switch to
Linux, the transition will be easier, too.

Thanks again,

Which computer is the printer attached to? If it is attached to the W98
computer, right click on the printer icon, click on sharing and make
sure that you don't have a password entered. If you do, uncheck the box.
That solved my printer problems when my husband's XP computer wouldn't
print from my 98 printer.

The printer is directly connected to the XP computer.

So, you can print ok with the XP computer, but you can't print from that
printer using the W98 computer? Did you install the W98 printer driver
on the W98 computer?

Yes to both questions. I'm getting a "user intervention

required" error msg when I try to print. All other
computers are able to print w/o problems (XP-Home desktop,
XP-Pro Laptop, 2000 desktop)
Thanks again in advance

On your W98 computer under Printer, Properties, Details, what is entered
under "Print to the following port"? We are sharing two printers...one
connected to the 98 computer and one connected to the XP computer. On
the 98 computer, for the printer connected to the XP computer I have the
following path listed for the XP printer: "\\Grf\ml-1450" (without the
quotes). The ml-1450 refers to the model number of the Samsung printer.
Grf refers to the name of computer that it is attached to.
