Default ME CAB files

Hi Mike

I didn't know if you'd be here tonight. Thanks for all your help.

I'm pleased to read that all is now well although personally I think a
system drive of just 500MB is too small and means that you won't for
example have the benefit of Win Me's system restore. However not knowing
the size of your HD I will leave it to anon to provide you with help as
they appear to know more about your PC than you have posted here.

No, I reset the partition to be the entire drive after I did the FDISK /MBR
thing. The anonymous sender said, "run FDISK again as per Mike's
instructions and set up a big drive", and I did do that. My "new" ME
computer has a 40GB hard drive that is now all set as C:.

The program FDISK is not very intuitive, I really did struggle with it for a
while. It seems like it is doing things back to front.

RAM compatibility. Start by checking the spec of each PC. Hopefully both
will be using SDRAM but it is possible that the older PC will only be
single sided and could even be P66 (its speed) with the newer PC more
likely to be P100 or perhaps P133. Single sided should work in the newer
PC but could cause problems, also any expansion rather depends on having
free slots on the newer PC. The speed of the RAM will drop to the lowest
speed component installed.

I will take the lid off my 98SE computer and check it all out tomorrow. I
have the lid off my "new" ME computer. There are seven cards in there, some
of them must have something to do with the company's network. I will not be
taking anything out though, the machine is working okay so it can stay as it
is as far as the cards are concerned. I really don't think I want to set up
a network, that sound's a bit complicated. It is attractive to me to have
all the RAM in one place though, and if I can attach my old drive then I
would have even loads more space.

Once I got my new toy working I phoned the lady who gave me the machine and
thanked her. She seemed surprised that I got it to work. She mentioned that
the others in her office couldn't get their machines to go. Maybe they don't
know to call into this group and ask a question. I'm very glad that I did.

James,

Thanks for the further feedback. Hard drive. I think I misunderstood
what you did since whilst 1GB is about OK for Win Me (2GB is better) 500MB
is really cutting it fine. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't be
able to add the hard disk from the old PC to the new PC but you will need
to jumper it correctly, for example if installing it as a slave on the
same cable as the existing drive.

Networking. This really isn't as complicated as it might seem. From
small beginnings ... I remember linking two PCs here via a hub when both
were running Win 98 or possibly even Win95 and setting up one of them
using Sygate as the host and having them both connecting to the net over
dial-up. Those were the days and how expensive that dial-up was then.
Today I have a mixed wired and wireless network with all manner of devices
hanging off the LAN ranging from PCs, laptop, printers, network storage (a
Buffalo Terastation) and a media player connected to my TV. The media
player allows me to watch the TV and pull content stored elsewhere on the
network. Makes for a great big video and audio jukebox. :-)

Glad to have been of help and good to read that you made so much progress.
Full marks for getting everything going and shame on those others you
mentioned who could not. Now at least you know where to send them. :-)
Feel free to contact me by e-mail, use the address I for the e-mail last
night if you still have it, if not the one below my sig will do fine.
