Subject: SUPPORT FROM SIMPLETECH (Case# CS089528)

Case#: CS089528
SimpleTech Part#: CC-USB235/160
System Manufacturer: HP
System Model: HP Pavilion 7855
System Model#: 7855 P # P3930A
Operating System: Win%20ME

SOLUTION: Hello Dr. Henry,
Here are the instructions for making your Simple Drive work properly in

WinME.

Right click on my computer and choose properties

Then click on the device manager tab

Now click the + next to disk drives. There you should see listed either

Samsung or HDS7...

Double Click on the device.

Go to the Settings tab on the page that opens

Now check the box for removable. There is no need to adjust any additional

settings on this page.

Click OK and then close the device manager.

Upon closing the system should ask you to reboot.

Allow the system to reboot and now the drive should appear properly under

my computer as removable disk (?

At this point the drive will need to be formatted if you have purchased a

160, 250 or 400GB drive, the 120GB drive is already prepared for use in
Win98se and WinME.

Please note that while the reformat will not hinder performance on WinXP

or 2000, it will erase the drive. If the drive has been used previously on
one of these systems and contains data, you will want to remove that data
back to the XP or 2000 system before completing the rest of this process.

Double click on the new drive and you should receive a message stating

that the drive is not formatted and would you like to format it now.

Choose yes and then click start. There is no need to change any of the

default settings.

The format process will then proceed. Time for this will vary depending on

drive size, but should take no more than 15min to complete.

At this point your drive will be ready for use.

If you need further assistance or any of these steps do not appear as

expected please feel free to call in. Any of the techs can help you or you
can ask for me specifically.

Boot to Safe Mode, and look in Device Manager there - is the device visible?
If so, then delete all references to it in DM, disconnect the drive, and
reboot to normal mode,
Plug in the drive, and see what happens

What I did was boot in safe mode from a cold start with the external drive
turned ON and drive USB connected.

I DELETED the External Drive in MY COMPUTER / PROPERTIES / DEVICE MANAGER
and removed the DRIVE by diconnecting the USB

I REBOOTED SEVERAL TIMES FROM A COLD START ( EXRENAL DRIVE USB DISCONNECTED )

THEN I REBOOTED FROM A COLD START ( EXRENAL DRIVE USB CONNECTED
AND DRIVE HOT )

SYSTEM FAILED WITH THE SAME ERROR

Please refrain from using upper case - it makes things very difficult to
read, and is considered shouting!

I suspect that you may not have removed all the entries for the drive....

Please follow these instructions exactly
Boot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager (in 'View devices by connection' mode)
Look for your Drive there - delete it and everything in the tree above it
until you get to the USB Root Hub (it may have a SCSI interface between it
and the hub)
got to 'View Devices by type' mode
Remove ALL entries in the 'Other Devices' branch if it exists
Remove ALL error-flagged devices.

Shut down and unplug the drive

Reboot to Normal Mode
Allow Windows to reinstall any drivers required, then reboot the PC

Once the system is running, THEN plug in the drive and see what happens.

I did say ***if it exists*** - and I'm unclear thether that was the only
problem that you encountered.

Are you saying that you were unable to switch to 'view devices by

I went back to place of Purchase and tested the SimpleDrive Drive on
an XP OS System. It went up on XP and worked just fine there at the place
of Purchase.

So I exchanged the SimpleDirive for a Western Digital External USB 80 GB
Hard Drive Dual Option Backup USB 2.0 and tried to Install that.

Now I have Purchased and am trying to Install a Western Digital External 80 GB
USB Hard Drive. The Hardware Install Fails due to a Windows Me System
Failure..

Hardware : HP Pavilion 7855 1 GHz Pentium III
Software : Windows Me ( with all critical and relevant Updates )

Fails in Hardware Install phase : USB Pluged In and Drive Powered ON

Various System Install Messages are displayed and then a Windows Me
System Failure occurs: Message Displayed

" There is a problem with a system file Windows might not be able to
run correctly
VxD dynamic link call : NTMAPHLP(02) + 00000002 to "004F", service1 "

I have tried different USB connections, the front of the machine and

I have a number of working devices on my USBs. A Printer, a Camera,
a sound mixer and microphone. They all run correctly.

In that case, you have a VERY non-standard system!! - the like of which I
have never seen before.
I assume the option is there, but when you click on it to activate it,
nothing happens?? -or is the option not there at all??
Try accessing Device Manager directly - go to Start|Run
type

SYSDM.CPL

and click OK - does that get you the System Properties UI ? - clicking on
the Device Manager tab, does that now enable you to switch views?
If not, then it would appear that for some reason, you have some form of
system policy in operation which is preventing access - and which implies
that you are not in control of your own computer, leading to the conclusion
that either you are working on a networked computer in a managed
environment, or are infested by malware (or have overtweaked the system!)

As this is an identical error to the original one it fairly conclusively
proves that there was nothing wrong with the original drive -

I suspect that you have an OEM install of ME, that has been heavily
trimmed - is there a file named NTMAP.INF in the Windows\INF folder??
If you search for and open the file BASE_2.CAB - is the file NTMAPHLP.PDR
present??

that you are not in control of your own computer, leading to the conclusion
that either you are working on a networked computer in a managed
environment, or are infested by malware (or have overtweaked the system!)

Now I have Purchased and am trying to Install a Western Digital External
80 GB

I have tried different USB connections, the front of the machine and
a powered CTR HUB. Same failure occurs.

I have a number of working devices on my USBs. A Printer, a Camera,
a sound mixer and microphone. They all run correctly.

As this is an identical error to the original one it fairly conclusively
proves that there was nothing wrong with the original drive -

I suspect that you have an OEM install of ME, that has been heavily
trimmed - is there a file named NTMAP.INF in the Windows\INF folder??
If you search for and open the file BASE_2.CAB - is the file NTMAPHLP.PDR
present??

I have uninstalled and installed the Western Digital External 80 GB
USB Hard Drive Software with a reboot. The Hardware Install now works
correctly when you plug in the USB cable and turn on the external drive
power !!!! ??? The external drive works OK !!!! It backs up files just fine.
I have done a full drive to drive " DUPLICATE ".

However the process has disabled my HP 750 psc printer director. I
unistalled the printer and reinstalled it several times. Now the printer
prints but will not bring up
the printer" DIRECTOR" so it will not Scan, etc.......

Dr. H.Mak ( PhD )

Hope you don't mind me for jumping in Noel, but maybe this might help H.Mak
with his new problem:-

"HP All-in-One Products - HP Officejet V and PSC 700, 900 Series Will Not
Install Correctly in Windows"
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...cname=bpu05051

Seems quite comprehensive and it does sound like a driver/installation
issue.
