Edit Startup/Boot Programs
Is there a way to edit the prgrams that startup automatically when windows
first boots. I have tons of crappy programs that startup when WIndows first boots (aol, kazaa, winamp, mcaffee, and all kinds of junk I dont need). I know there has to be a file somewhere than can edit what prgrams WIndows boots on startup. OH and I'm not talking about thigns in my "STartUP" Menu group I already got rid of those. Can anyone help? |

You could uninstall programs you don't want.
You could check and see if they have an option to be disabled at startup. You could disable as a last resort using Msconfig. (Start-Run-MSCONFIG-Startup tab) ....Alan -- Alan Edwards, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/index.html In microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion, "Hburg Help" Hburg wrote: Is there a way to edit the prgrams that startup automatically when windows first boots. Click on START, then RUN and type the letters MSCONFIG, then click OK.
On the new screen, click on the STARTUP tab, and take note of each program. Once done connect to the web and go to the following website; http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php Right under INTRODUCTION, click on PROGRAMS, and on the new screen, click on ALL ITEMS. Click on "If you are a regular visitor, click HERE to go straight to the list". In the Search box, type in any program you are interested in. They are all explained and there is a recommendation as to whether the program is required or not. Once you have determined which programs to keep in the Startup, try and disable those you are not keeping via Preferences or Options in the actual programs, otherwise return to START/RUN/MSCONFIG and click on the Startup tab. Remove the checkmark in whatever program you no longer require in STARTUP. Alternativley, you may want to consider downloading a neat little free utility that will manage this for you. You can get Startup Control Panel 2.8 by Mike Lin at; www.mlin.net . Hope this helps Dan "Hburg Help" Hburg wrote in message ... To cut back on the number of programs starting at boot, check the programs
themselves for an option not to load. You might have to double click an icon in the tray--others might require a right click--and then look for preferences or options. Win98: If you cannot find an option, look in the start up points listed in the Win95 paragraph below or as a last resort use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs. There might be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus program and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable an entry in msconfig and it loads again after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed the option on the program itself. If you don't know what an entry is, check he http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm Win95: If you cannot find an option, you will have to remove the program entry at the startup point or use the tool mentioned below. Programs are generally started on boot from the start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe): 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run 2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce 4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce 5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServices 6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServicesOnce 7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunOnce\Setup There is a freeware program that makes this process a lot easier to manage: Startup Manager, http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/ -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP Windows 98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Hburg Help" Hburg wrote in message ...
