What exactly is the procedure you are using and what exactly is the problem
that you run into? -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Paul" wrote in message ... I have pretty new computer and I couldn't install Windows 98SE. Please help me! When I am putting the windows into a cd-rom, the startup is running normaly. The procces of preparing the instalation is correctly. After that it suppose to takes me to install screen, but it is nothing happened. It's only black screen. I would wait ever, and ever, and it isn't going to do anything. What is the cause? The command 'FDISK' is not working too. I had to format the hard drive under a windows XP. |

You haven't described the procedure you are using, but I suspect the problem
is the formatting. FDISK is for creating partitions, not formatting. However, if you created the partitions under XP then you may have created NTFS partitions, and Windows won't see them. I would recommend starting with a boot floppy rather than the CD. Get a utility to make one at www.bootdisk.com. Then use FDISK to remove any existing partitions and create new ones. If FDISK won't work, you need to fix that problem before proceeding (you will also need to describe exactly what the error is). Then format the partition, and try the installation again. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Paul" wrote in message ... The command 'FDISK' is not working too. I had to format the hard drive under a windows XP. What exactly are you trying to accomplish? To install Windows 98SE in addition to Windows XP? or To install Windows 98SE as a replacement for Windows XP? If you install Windows 98 SE on the new machine you are quite likely going to render the warranty null and void, so that may be a consideration. You have a 3.0 ghz hyperthreading CPU and I am pretty sure that Windows 98 SE will not make any use whatever of the hyperthreading capabilities so that portion, at least, of your purchase cost is wasted with respect to Windows 98SE. And it may well be that your hardware components (motherboard chipset etc.) are not supported in Windows 98 SE so you may end up using generic drivers etc. for at least some items resulting in further reductions in performance. I've made two types of partition: NTFS and FAT(both under WinXP). You wrote I should fix the problem of fdisk, so how can I do it, is it going to work?? |

If this hard disk is larger than 64Gb, make sure you have the latest version
of FDISK. For instance, if the drive is 80Gb, then FDISK will report about 10Gb free space. http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q263044 Fdisk Does Not Recognize Full Size of Hard Disks Larger than 64 GB If you are already using the latest version, or if the disk is smaller than 64Gb, then goto http://www.digitalissues.co.uk/html/...-wipe-zap.html and download and run ZAP or WIPE. These utilities remove all existing partitioning, giving FDISK a clean disk, and removing the false reporting of available disk space you are currently getting. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Paul" wrote in message ...
