Problem starting Windows 98 SE
I run Win 98SE on a 500mhz desktop. I have 640 mb ram. I
have had no problems previously. I bought a Nikon digital camera. It came with a NikonView, a program to manipulate the digital images from the camera. I istalled it successfully (I got a successful installation message). It asked if I wanted to restart the computer. I clicked "YES". It restarted the computer, but the startup comes to a point and stops. The computer is networked with a laptop and a laser printer. The startup proceeds far enough to ask for a network password and then returns a message saying the domain does not exist. This is normal since the domain it is looking for is from a previous employment. It continues to boot up. I get a desktop background screen and my taskbar flashes by and the MacAfee Internet logo comes on and then the screen locksup and the desktop does not come up (program icons). The mouse is active but the taskbar doesnot come up when the cursor in placed on the bottom of the desktop. I called Nikon and they tried to help. They suggested uninstalling the NikonView through Safe Mode. The computer will go to Safe Mode but again ther is no desktop. I can boot to MSDOS andSafe Mode with Commnad screen. I tried to go to an earlier Registry but it goes to the same background desktop screen. When I look at the scanreg it shows that the older registry did not start. Can I reinstall Windows 98SE? The computer came originally with Windows 98. The Second Edition was an upgrade. How do I go about reinstalling Windows 98SE? |

Reinstalling W98 is the last resort--here's a way you can probably get in to
the system.
