Win98 Installation problem
Hot-shyt top-poasted:
That my Point . Not necessarily still in shrink-wrap. What's not necessarily still in shrink-wrap? Your head? I can sell you un-opened win-98 CD and booklet - still in original shrink-wrap. The product key is visible. I don't have to open it to see the product key. Same is true for all Windows XP system-builder CD with booklet: Product key is visible through the shrinkwrap. Understand now, kemosabe? |

There may be a solution to your problem that doesn't involve installing Windows 98 all over again: http://support.microsoft.com/KB/976264 Back in February, Microsoft issued an "Application Compatibility Update" for Vista and Windows 7. The specific purpose of this update was to enable "legacy" programs to run on the most current operating systems. I'd had a problem similar to yours ever since my Win98 PC got sick at the end of 2008 and I had to buy a Vista machine. I was on CompuServe for years, but the CompuServe 4.02 e-mail software simply would not work on the new computer. (The e-mails are stored in a proprietary CServe format, so transferring them over to Outlook was out of the question.) I tried installing the software straight, I tried running the program without installing, I tried "compatibility mode." Nothing seemed to work. I investigated setting up a "virtual machine" till I learned that my dual-core Intel CPU was NOT designed to handle that. So I thought that my only choices were either to hope that my old PC wouldn't die completely, or resign myself to losing six years' worth of e-mails. That is, until Microsoft issued this Update. The first thing I did was to copy the entire CompuServe folder to the Vista machine via a thumb drive and load it, and -- presto, it worked!!! Now I have my CompuServe program and filing cabinet on the new PC -- problem gone! Caveat: The program is not "installed," in the sense that Vista doesn't see it in the All Programs list. And it's sitting in its own directory outside the Program Files. But I created a desktop icon to call it up easily anytime I need to. One other thing: On the link I provided, there is a long list of programs that this Update is supposed to work with. CompuServe 4.02 is not there -- but it started to work when I installed the Update. If your program isn't listed, it doesn't necessarily mean that it won't work. Maybe this update will help you to run your financial analysis software copied straight from your old machine onto a new system. Good luck. JorgeA |

Cold-text top-poasted: Searching for illegal Downloads is a illegal searches, There is no such thing as an "illegal search". I think searching for certain kinds of image/video material is illegal in some jurisdictions, but I know what you mean. [] And Microsoft will lose NO REVENUE. Microsoft will not suffer any financial dammage if I download Windows 98 CD and product key because they are no longer selling Windows 98. They currently recieve NO REVENUE from sales of Windows 98. That doesn't mean they can't say that no-one should make such a copy available. (Whether anyone who _down_loads it could get away with saying they didn't know if this would have to be tested in court.) That is different compared to any music or movie CD or DVD. I fear there is some parallel. If a music CD or a DVD is no longer in production, the copyright holders still take a dim view of its being made available: I suppose the (somewhat tenuous, but still) argument is that they might at some point in the future make the material available again, by re-release or re-compilation, and the copying would hurt their potential future sales; how valid that argument is depends on how likely you think it is that such a rerelease or recompilation would occur. [] If I download a windows-98 CD from a torrent, but never use it, then what law have I broken? How have I violated Microsoft's copyrights or EULA? I haven't. It's just about possible you could claim not to have read the EULA, if you never use the CD. -- J. P. Hot-text wrote: The CD with a product key. It's a new Windows 98 CD with a valid license. Even MEB would agree with that. No - not necessarily. I have some win-98 second edition (system builder version) still in shrink-wrap. The product key sticker is visible. I can use that product key to install windows 98. And then I can sell the CD with the product key to you. And you have no idea that I'm also using that same key. And Microsoft would not know either. I think it is the selling of the CD after using the key that would break the terms. Whether that may be actually illegal will vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction; it _may_ hinge upon whether the prohibition against doing so was also visible without opening the pack. Certainly MS would not know that it was happening. [] Read the fine print of the EULA. Microsoft would not agree with you that the sale would result in a legal transfer of the license unless you also sold the computer on which that product key was first used. That depends on what type of install it was - full retail (I'm always surprised to see those on the shelves of PC World - who buys them at that price?), OEM, or what. I think it is only the cheapest sort that require the computer to be transferred too - the higher ones allow the transfer provided all trace has been _removed_ from the original computer. You think that buying and selling software on the internet through e-bay or similar is the same as buying and selling a clock, or a chair, or a car. It's not. Sure, you can do it, but if you ask the copyright owner of the software, they will tell you why your software license is not necessarily transferable. Understand now, kemosabe? -- J. P. Very interesting discussion with the exception of illegally copying Microsoft software. Microsoft is an illegal, criminal organization, that has been convicted of breaking many laws in many countries. "Stealing" their software is no crime. A new full retail copy costs $40 at Ebay. And how exactly do you know if that "copy" does indeed qualify or adhere to all the terms of Macroshaft's EULA? How do you know if the product key for any software sold on ebay is "virgin" and has not ever been used, or is not in current use? And how does buying product keys for Microsoft products on ebay constitute some sort of financially beneficial transaction for Microsoft? Why would any bonehead buy a product key or license for Windows 98 on ebay, when (a) lists of product keys are available on the net, (b) win-98 CD's can be downloaded via torrent, and (c) there is no on-line validation process for windows 98. I located this thread from Google since I was interested in a SATA RAID configuration in 98 Second Edition There is no SATA-I controller chip, add-on PCI card or motherboard I/O sub-system that does not have win-98 drivers. That is probably not the case with SATA-2 or SATA-3 controller chips. |
