new (?) zone alarm update
"richard" wrote in message ... At least it was new for me. richard Maybe it is new - but a little more detail would never go amiss!... such as the version number, the size, and/or whether it (again) screws up System Restore. It's not that I don't trust ZA - it's simply that I don't reckon that they care about Win ME any more, and reckon that they can get away with things that they couldn't do a few years ago! Combined with the problem that its resource usage appears to be exceeded only by Norton - and its 'uninstallability' is on a par with the same - I refuse to put ZA and ME together in the same para, except 'in extremis'.... and I'm too tired to do any better than that, ATM. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's |

new (?) zone alarm update
v6.1744.001; 10.04MB.
Installed 2130 BST. Will find out in a few hours time if System Restore is still b******d. (My only adverse report) Re your comment on ZA being a resource hog, just checked on Resource Meter, ZA running, System/User/GDI Free 51%/51%/65%; ZA shut down 62%/62%/73%. Process Explorer shows ~98% CPU free. ZA using ~1% CPU. In your opinion, is this resource hogging on a WinME box? Can't comment on its "uninstallability" as I have never tried to remove ZA. (except as part of the update wizard). Can only comment that AFAIK it seems to do its job, judging from the number of alerts logged. I bow to your superior knowledge on matters ME, but your experience dos not seem to agree with mine. Please feel free to correct me on any misunderstandings of your post. -- Delboy A common mistake that people made when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. I did specify 'resource hog' just shutting down ZA from the system tray doesn't shut down all the services it uses - it merely by-passes them temporarily, IIRC - if you were to uninstall ZA, you may find that your free resources climbed further. 10% of resources used for a firewall is bad enough - any more would be unacceptable. FWIW, I just installed ZA on an ME system here to test it the system started at 89/89/93 (nothing except Windows installed/running) After installing ZA, resources came out at 83/83/91 - much to my surprise - but as soon as I opened an IE window, they dropped to 75/75/84, rising to 80/80/89 on closing the IE window. How that translates once the rules start being built, I have no idea - but it's not as bad as I thought/remembered -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's |

Thanks for your feedback Noel. Unless you can recommend a freeware
firewall, I think in the absence of any obvious disadvantages (except "killing" System Restore, I will continue to use ZA. -- Delboy A common mistake that people made when trying to design something completely foolproof was to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools. Personally, I don't use a software firewall - the NAT firewall built into my
router works fine for me (or Windows XP's own firewall works well, for that) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Delboy" wrote in message ... new (?) zone alarm update
Noel, I'm using ZA as a firewall and it does not kill my ME restore..
could it be different processors and or MB's that cause this reported problem? (the older version or the newer version seem to act the same) RTS |

No - it's certain versions of ZoneAlarm that are known to kill System
Restore, inasmuch as it prevents automatic restore point generation, seemingly because the system is never long enough 'at rest' for the event to be triggered. It's possible to tweak these versions (most of them, anyhow, IIRC) by adjusting one or two settings in ZA. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2006, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.crashfixpc.com/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Rocky T Squirrel" wrote in message ...
