how do I install icsharep?
I'm trying to get ICS installed and keep getting the
following message: 'Internet Connection Sharing must have ICSHAREP installed.' I've got an ME machine connected to internet via NIC and cable modem, and also connected to home network via NIC and hub. I've played around a bit adding and removing protocols (my set-up doesn't find the inf files for TCP/IP, netbeui etc in C:\windows\inf even when they are there. I have to put them in a temp directory to do this.) and clearing out registry settings. Is there a way to get my system to install the seemign ly mising icsharep (e.g. registry hack on HKLM\enum\network)? Or is it a problem with my network cards (they're both NDIS 3 I think) Any thoughts? Jonathan |

Yes. That's when I get the error message. (usually just
before Home Networking Wizard runs) I also get it when I run the Home Networking Wizard subsequently. My first inclination would be to uninstall ICS from Add/Remove, then
reinstall it again, and see if that clears the error *during the install* - if not, then uninstall, replace the INF from the CAB files, and repeat. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Jonathan" wrote in message ... how do I install icsharep?
I've done your 'first inclination' (but deleting ICSharing
registry key prior to the uninstall). (I'm less sure I've done it w/o doing the registry edit, however.) I think I've done the second ... I know I recently extracted the inf to a temp directory and then compared contents with one in C:\windows\inf using a file compare utility and they were exactly the same! I may try these one more time, but do you have any other ideas in the mean time? how do I install icsharep?
Why play with the registry? - that's what install/uninstall routines are
for!! (at least in theoryg) File compares can be fooled -or you may be looking at the wrong copy of the file! You don't need NetBeui, whatever else you might need - so forget it (and it can cause problems). Have you made sure that you have the correct driver installed for the network cards (i.e. does the network run OK until you install ICS??) You *may* have 'version soup' - have you reinstalled ME over itself from the CD at any point? Have you had a virus infection? - what's your AV?? -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Jonathan" wrote in message ... how do I install icsharep?
Responses below!
Thanks Jonathan -----Original Message----- Why play with the registry? - that's what install/uninstall routines are for!! (at least in theoryg) J: Indeed! It seems to me (IMHO) that one or more install routine ain't working, 'cos icsharep isn't getting installed. File compares can be fooled -or you may be looking at the wrong copy of the file! J: I use Beyond Compare, which is pretty good. Allows you to compare files in a file explorer view and then contents of two files side-by-side. Use it all the time at work (multimedia/web development). You don't need NetBeui, whatever else you might need - so forget it (and it can cause problems). J: I don't have it installed, but installed it and uninstalled it as part of a set of steps recommended to fix problems with netconn (on practicallynetworked.com and homenethelp.com amongst others) Have you made sure that you have the correct driver installed for the network cards (i.e. does the network run OK until you install ICS??) J: Yes. I believe I have correct and latest manufacturers drivers (as opposed to microsoft) and both cable modem connection and home network work ok and at the same time. You *may* have 'version soup' - have you reinstalled ME over itself from the CD at any point? J: I've never reinstalled. Have you had a virus infection? - what's your AV?? J: not been infected as far as I know. I have Norton AV as part of Norton Internet security. Been running since Jan 2002 (and I've upgraded to 2003 and 2004 edition) J: One final thing. I had a similar problem trying to set- up VPN a couple of years ago. This was before I put a network card in the machine and was accessing internet via dialup. When trying to install VPN I kept getting a message about NDISWAN not being installed, and the MS VPN adapter wouldn't appear in network properties (just as ICS adapter and protocols don't appear in network properties when I install it now) ------------- end of new stuff! -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f...2001/Mar01/Mar 27pmvp.asp "Jonathan" wrote in message ... how do I install icsharep?
Oh - Norton
Is this the Corporate version, or Retail?? FWIW, I'd never consider attempting anything to do with system modifications with any (Retail) Norton product installed or running - but I have been reliably informed that the Corporate version is considerably more OS-friendly. Norton and ME do NOT get on - and for me, ME is more important than Norton! WRT comparing files - you have to ensure that you're comparing the right copies! In my ME system (currently an ICS client - but used to be the host), I have C:\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM\ICSHAREP.VXD dated 8th June 2000 C:\WINDOWS\INF\ICSHAREP.INF ditto C:\WINDOWS\INF\INFBACK\ICSSHAREP.INF dated 13/3/2004 Installing ICS and rebooting.... gives the same result! The original files are held in PRECOPY1.CAB and WIN_20.CAB in the C:\Windows\Options branch and on the WinME CD. Extract the two files, and place them in the correct place, using MSCONFIG, etc - then Install ICSHAREP.INF See if that does the trick -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Jonathan" wrote in message ...
