No Internet Access?
A couple of weeks ago, I got a USB 2.0 10/100 Ethernet Adapter from HK so
that I could network my old Compaq laptop running 98se to my PC running XP Home. The adapter came with no drivers but a friend knew what the drivers were and sent me the correct ones. I installed them and everything worked perfectly and really fast (I am on up to 8bps broadband). The only problem was that the adapter was not a very tight fit and the CAT5e cable had to be wedged in at an angle to make the connection. I thought that this was a bad idea and could damage the cable connector so I purchased another, different Ethernet Adapter from HK with a Realtek RTL8150 10/1000 chip in it (USB 1.1 and a copy no doubt even though it was advertiseed as USB 2.0)? Everything works fine and the two comps are talking to each other and can see each others files etc. The problem is that now, on the laptop, although I can get out on the Internet, most sites refuse to load or say that I am not allowed to view the sites? Things like Google are not a problem but eBay, MSN and the likes never load? This never happened before with the other adapter and the worse thing is that it wont even allow me to go onto the Windows Update site! I had to load the modem drivers onto the laptop and connect directly thru the modem to get the 98se updates and then remove the modem drivers. Could anyone sugeest something that I can do to alleviate this problem please as I think it might be a configuration problem but not being a computer 'teckie' I wouldn't know how to sort this out, unless it is put in idiot proof language? Many thanks in advance. Mike Rochester UK |

Most routers/access points have a built-in firewall, and maybe, maybe, you have a firewall conflict. Beyond that, since the Win98 computer apparently works, and the other is aberrant, I'll vote on the firewall. After that, post your question on the XP networks NG, and logon to the HK site to their KB or support. |

You were right, it was the firewall! I now have XP Home on both machines and
they are both going great guns, especially the laptop which goes onto the Internet a lot faster than the PC does now! Such a difference. Thanks for your help. Mike.
