new load of win 98 extremely slow
I have an older system with a 500 mghtz processor and 128
megs of RAM. I have on board video and sound. I re formatted and instaled win 98 (was 95). The entire system slugs now. Clicking the start button I can pull up the start menu- but if i click for instance settings, then control panel - it will take almost a full minute to pull up the control panel. this is with no other programs even loaded! I have re formated and re installed win 98 a second time to be sure a file was not corrupted during the install- which by the way took much longer than i think it should have- 4 hours. what should i check?? or do??? kymn |

Think I might be looking at the disk and running a thorough surface test.

Hi,
First of all Windows Should not take 4 hours to install. just at lest 30-60Min. And you need to check your hard drive space. most computers slow down a lot is becouse the Hard Drive space is used up. example: Total Space 1GB Used:872.6MB Free:127.4MB you should try to at lest save 300MB of free space. A PC would be slow like this. Example:Total space:312MB Used:278MB (just with windows on it) Free:34MB (can or will slow down your pc. example: Total Space 1GB Used:937MB Free:63MB 1000KB= 1MB 1000MB= 1GB you can figur out your free space by using math also. Example(s): 1. 2. 3457MB Total space 957.9MB - 1947MB Used space -785.4MB ------- ------- 1510MB Free space 172.5MB I hoped this Might help you. And remember that low Free space can also slow your computer DOWN. C For information on installing W98, go to: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour/html/w98_restore.html or go to: http://www.waynescomputerworld.com/cleaninstall.html ^ Also tells you how to Formate/Reformate your Hard Drive for Reintallation(s.)^ Or upgrades. But if you DON'T have a boot disk go to: www.bootdisk.com Have a good day. -----Original Message----- I have an older system with a 500 mghtz processor and 128 megs of RAM. Identify the brand of hard drive, go to the drive maker's web site and
download their diagnostic software. It runs from a floppy disk and will tell you the health of your hard drive. If the drive has failed, you will have to replace it. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Kymn" wrote in message ... She said she formatted the drive; therefore, unless it is an antique, she
will have plenty of hard drive space. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "C" wrote in message ... new load of win 98 extremely slow
Physical hard drive partition space available on C:\?
Drivers for all hardware up to date and installed correctly? Network/DSL or Cable modem interface installed correctly? Sounds like msgsvr is looking for a network keeping windows explorer busy.
