Good Luck (my father was a GP, whose hands were too big to be the surgeon he wanted to be!) - ASK first if you can foresee problems - it's rather like dissecting out a mitral valve...... -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "jvc" wrote in message ... My Dear Noel, I feel privileged to have an MS MVP by my side. Thanks a zillion.I am an ENT Surgeon with very little Tech savvy but will try reinstallig I.E over the weekend. Will download AVG straight away. jvc "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Believe me, it takes a LOT less to remove and reinstall IE than to reformat the OS!! - I did the IE thing 5 times in one day so I could write that spiel! (I've reinstalled ME less, in the past 5 years!!) ANYTHING is better than Norton in ME - almost including 'nothing'! - My personal preference is for AVG (it's free, after all!), backed up by the usual tools such as AdAware, and occasional scans with other protection. (and the more 'common-sense' and 'learning' the better the eventual experience!) If you do go for the reformat/reinstall, then your first stop afterwards MUST be Windows Updates, for the 290700 patch, - you can then choose whichever others you need, but I would recommend that you install IE6SP1 as a high priority, and then follow with everything else that is marked 'Critical' - which amounts to about 43 patches........ -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "jvc" wrote in message ... My Dear Noel, I read carefully your helpsite instructions.Frankly speaking,I couldn't muster up courage to go thru ununstalling I.E.I'd rather reformat and make do with I.E.5.5.Which Antivirus should I install when I reformat?Should I continue with Norton2005?Or do you suggest anything else?...........jvc "jvc" wrote in message ... Thanx again Noel, you have been a great help.I have save the webpage of your help site. Will follow the steps.Already downloaded IERadicator. Will let you know the outcome. jvc "Noel Paton" wrote: 1) Norton is quite possibly the source of your problems 2)You almost certainly have a corrupt installation of IE which requires root-canal work to fix Such symptoms are frequently the result of mistakenly attempting to reinstall ME over itself without first reverting back to IE5.5 - the resulting 'Version Soup' is almost impossible to repair, and the only sure way known is to completely remove IE and then reinstall whichever version you require. Instructions for this process are here http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/ReInIE.htm Please post back if you need more details - preferably before attempting the process!!g -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "jvc" wrote in message ... Thanx Noel.I did scan with xsoft spy.No spyware was found. You are right.More problems after reinstalling.I had to reinstall Norton antivirus. jvc "Noel Paton" wrote: Oh, gawd! "I even reinstalled ME" - is NOT recommended procedure, and almost certainly means that you now have more problems than you started with (especially if you reinstalled from the CD). Did you also do a check for spyware? You may already have a virus/spyware hijack download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling viruses are not present on your PC http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp - update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files. Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the CoolWebSearch hijacker. http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html Use CWShredder, the removal tool: http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/ download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install, update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from your system. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm http://tinyurl.com/6oztj Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "jvc" wrote in message ...
