I am truly baffled......but I had other problems on here before the
download.....I have a lot of XP folders from a failed upgrade. So perhaps I was more vulnerable to the bad stuff!! Odd that you and I both downloaded that blasted program. I have removed it, but the Zone Image Express is right there in the middle of where my OE emails were.....so grasping at straws here. I thought perhaps it just might provide a clue to Mart. Good luck....I am still sorting the mess out on here. Other than that download, nothing else new was on here. Cheers....Heather "Eileen" wrote in message ... Heather, The problem I had was with the font (only in Ad-aware and HP PhotoSmart Scan). HP had me download to solve the problem but it didn't. I don't seem to have any other major problems yet). Eileen "Heather" wrote in message ... THAT IS THE ONE!! Sorry, but I got the name wrong. I downloaded HP Image Zone Express....and then it had an update......after that you would not believe how many things went haywire!!!!!!! Something (had to be the above) wiped out Firefox and Outlook Express, for starters. I found that folders were moved in Windows Explorer and am still trying to sort that out. Found all my *.dbx files and imported them back into OE......reinstalled Firefox.....now some of my desktop icons are just plain jane white MS ones.....Roxio, MS Word, etc. Not quite sure what all was affected, but the fact that you are having major problems after downloading the same program makes me highly suspicious!! Perhaps there is a clue here......I just found two different folders (one I found in Applog) that contain folders for Image Zone Express...... Hey....we have a glimmer of light here!! Neither, totally satisfactory solutions. Rapidly running out of further suggestions. BTW - Eileen, I doubt that "Opens with ACDSee for Windows 95/98/200" has anything to do with it. Yo Mart.....
Been trying to sort the OE problem out with Majik.....and he had this to say about the Photo program...... /quote...... It could have messed with the email settings, especially if it's one of those "email friends and family" type programs. I generally advise against installing those unless they have no other alternatives. Dell has/had one that was a demo and when it expired, it expired......left a ton of junk and file associations to rebuild. I think they sorted that one out though. /unquote....... Would the file associations he mentions have anything to do with Eileen's problems?? And it was one of those *email friends and family* programs. Just gathering bits and pieces. And off to the store now.......but hope that there is a nugget or two in this for you..... You can write me at figgyd_ca at yahoo dot ca and I will send you the HP letter if you wish.....or any other info if you deem it to be applicable. It may not help me out, but perhaps might help others if they download this thing. Cheers....Heather "Mart" wrote in message ... This program definitely has some major problems - I just loaded it into an
ME VPC, and the program opens with not a word visible - and freezes. It then updates itself..... The updater then updates itself..... ( and that's a 4.2MB download!! - the dang program in the first place was only 5.5MB!!) - and then says that there are no updates available for anything on the system. However, I can't see any effects (yet) outside the program itself. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2005, Windows) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's "Heather" wrote in message ... Wow.......that is what it did to me. Took me a couple of minutes to figure
out that it was re-updating itself and I think I cancelled that one.....can't remember. But hell.....if you can't trust HP, who can you trust (don't answer that one.......) It is very proprietary......the first download automatically took over the My Pictures Folder and copied them all into it. I did crop and brighten one and sent it to Elayne.....she never got it. And there is no copy in my Sent Folder. I opened it about midnight and shut the computer down a bit later......reopened in the morning.....no problems. Shut it down in the late afternoon which I usually don't do.....and upon reopening it last night, all hell broke loose. Trying to remember what all happened......but OE was totally empty. Firefox was totally wiped out.....nothing in it. Just before that I decided to move an icon in Quick Launch to the right......lost Quick Launch immediately. I searched for my *.dbx files and they were also in Applog Folder (hidden file called Application Data)......moved it over to the C Drive and was able eventually to import my emails and settings. But it seems that they came from the *original* Application Data sub folder. I have been watching the dates. I had a heck of a time importing them and also my Address Book. But eventually used Majik's OE Backup prog and got it from there. On viewing this *hidden folder*, it appears that most of it is from the failed XP install.....date of Feb. 19th, which is when I tried to upgrade. Debating on moving it to the Recycle Bin, but not sure about that. I had two OE Identities, one of which was corrupt.....they were duplicated in this hidden folder. Now the original corrupt one contains nothing. Will remove that one. IOW......a lot of cleaning up to do and I am not sure what I can remove and can't. So perhaps it might be the best to just get that 2nd HD and put XP on and move my data (which is pretty well all backed up already) and then wipe that ME drive.....but proceeding slowly on this one. Thanks for checking that one out for me Noel......my gut hunch is that it certainly caused my problems.....and perhaps could cause problems for others. If it indeed caused all this on my computer, it is rather dangerous. The only other program I installed in the last week was my QuickTax one on March 28th......and at the time I noticed that when I defragged, the entry for it was 1,550 kb....odd. Hope the above is clear.......Heather "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... Sorry, you guys - been AWOL and just got back. Due to the lateness here (bed
time), I'll try to re-visit in the morning. Although likely to be AWOL again, later tomorrow. (But I still suspect Eileen's bomblet g) BTW - Eileen, if all your other Windows look like the .jpg you've attached (and from what I remember of your original Ad-Aware screen shot), then your fonts are a mess. Even the Title bar looks wrong. In fact, none of the fonts look right. What do you think - Heather and Noel? Be interesting to see how Noel fares with the HP Zone Express - but still not (yet) convinced that it's the culprit. Mart "Noel Paton" wrote in message ... You guys have lost me. What program are you talking about... is it the HP
Image Zone Express? It made me remember that some months ago, I downloaded PICASA GRAPHIC VIEWER. I didn't like it so I uninstalled it. Since Mart went to bed could someone comment on my earlier post?
Mart, I don't see anywhere to disassociate. Checked is 'allow postscript file to override job options'. What does this mean? I forget what her *bomblet* was....but I know it was important. Do refresh
my memory. And you are right about the fonts on her photo attachment. That is what Firefox looks like until you go in and change the fonts. I have mine set to Arial in that program.....hate whatever that one is....Times Roman? I didn't even have to compare, but noticed it was like the *out of the box* Firefox, as TomV would say. Yes, Eileen.....we are talking about the Image Zone Express. And you just
flagged something in my memory with that PICASA stuff. I was reading a forum somewhere and the posters were complaining about exactly what you are saying....that even after uninstalling it, there were bits all over the computer. Try going to Google and put "Picasa" in and perhaps you might find what I am talking about......can't remember for the life of me how I stumbled onto it. Oh....quite often when you uninstall a program, bits are left behind. I do two things. I run the Microsoft RegClean 4.1 to take out the keys and I go into Windows Explorer and delete any folders that are left from the particular program I uninstalled. I have run more intensive registry cleaners with the name of the program (i.e. HP or Picasa) and found a lot of stuff.....but I am not that sure of myself in the Registry, so generally leave it alone. This program definitely has some major problems - I just loaded it into an ME VPC, and the program opens with not a word visible - and freezes. I am truly baffled......but I had other problems on here before the download.....I have a lot of XP folders from a failed upgrade. Cheers....Heather |
