Critical Updates Screwed Up My System. :(
I installed several critical updates, and after restarting
my computer, I realise I could not click on any of the icons on my desktop, or use the start button or any of the programs anymore. Im just stuck on desktop. I'll take bets on the following
1) you installed all the updates in one fell swoop - NOT a good idea! 2) you had your Anti-Virus running at the time (Norton?) - another NOT GOOD idea! try this Boot to Safe Mode, and see if that works - if it does, then Start|Run type SCANREG /FIX click OK, and reboot on request see if that helps post back with your results. -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Joanna" wrote in message ... Critical Updates Screwed Up My System. :(
Noel is a wise and gifted guru, you would do well to heed his suggestions.
The one and two are the most important. When updating, critical updates will normally set a restore point in the event something goes awry. Installing many updates simultaneously is just asking for trouble. And when installing most anything, it is a good idea to disable your AV (Norton or not) and also any 'cleaning' apps you may have that would possibly clean out the temp file during boot/reboot. Hey Noel,
you were right on both counts! You are a godsend. My gut feeling is that I installed the patches in one swoop. I have installed patches with norton runnin before, and it usually reboots fine. Ill try your suggestion. Im breatheless from excitement. Wish me luck! |
