Brian,
Norton Utilities 2000. I have it, somewhere in this mess. It's not SystemWorks, which first debuted just after NU2K, I think, and subsumed it. (That or the original SW was essentially NU + NAV + etc., and they then ceased to produce NU.) -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP for Win9x "Brian A." GoneFishn@aFarAwayLake wrote in message ... The only thing I find on Norton Utilities is for MAC, not Windows. Could you mean SystemWorks which Utilities is a part of? Cannot completely uninstall Norton SystemWorks using Norton Uninstall Deluxe Situation: You cannot uninstall SystemWorks by using Norton Uninstall Deluxe. Solution: The preferred method for uninstalling any Windows-based program is to use the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Windows Control Panel. Norton Uninstall Deluxe is an integral component of the Norton SystemWorks suite, therefore, you should not use it to uninstall itself or any of the programs in the Norton SystemWorks suite. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------- http://tinyurl.com/5cjjh Removing Norton SystemWorksT after Add/Remove Programs does not work -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------- AFAIK, symevnt.386 is part of NAV. Thanks Gary, Brian, Alan, et al for all your information. I reinstalled
Norton Utilities 2000 and then used Norton's uninstall routine and guess what? The same damned message! Missing SYMEVNT.386! Pity that software developers of a large company such as Symantec/Norton couldn't write a decent uninstall routine that would delete their program totally for ones computer! Guess I'll have to work my way through the "other" suggestions in order that the computer can attain a normal boot without this damned error message. Oh well, head down and backside up and I'll give it a go. "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... Thanks! -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- -- ---------- http://tinyurl.com/5cjjh Removing Norton SystemWorksT after Add/Remove Programs does not work -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- -- ---------------------------- AFAIK, symevnt.386 is part of NAV. I find no mention of it for SW. All the below is for NAV. This is for NAV 2001: http://tinyurl.com/6c6a6 Error: "Unable to find device file. . symevnt.386" when starting Windows after installing Norton AntiVirus 2001 Situation: When you restart the computer after installing Norton AntiVirus 2001, you see the error message "Unable to find device file...symevnt.386," and a message that a file specified in the registry or System.ini file could not be found. The computer will not start in normal mode. Solution: This can happen if an essential Symantec file was damaged or did not install. In most cases, this can be fixed by downloading and then installing the file: 1.. Download the Sevinst.exe file and save it to the Windows desktop: 2.. When the download is finished, double-click the file to install it. 3.. Restart the computer. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- -- -- For NAV 2000: http://tinyurl.com/7x5cg -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- -- -- Also: http://tinyurl.com/4sybs How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2000 manually when installed under Windows 95/98/Me http://tinyurl.com/x79k How to uninstall Norton AntiVirus 2003 or earlier by using the Rnav2003.exe removal utility If none of the above is for the correct version or product, please repost with them included for help. -- Brian A. A friend has asked me to "fix" her old Compaq Presario 3000 (about early 90's model I think) that has Win98 o/s. We have tried uninstalling a number of Symantec/Norton programs (Norton Utilities and Norton Uninstall Deluxe). Was not able to uninstall one of these via its own uninstall routine and not able to fully uninstall via the Add/Remove program in Control Panel either. When the computer now boots up we get a DOS message saying that the computer is looking for Symevnt.386. Hitting the Enter key allows the computer to complete its boot successfully. After a "search" in the Registry I have noted a number of entries in Local Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\SharedDLLS that refer to SYMANTEC (Live Updates etc ) including SYMEVNT.386. How can I safely delete these entries? I ran MS's RegClean but that made no difference. Thanks for any help. |
