Default ndis.vxd and ntkern.vxd

I recently installed a Firewire 3 port adapter. When I
try to add the new hardware, I get an error message saying
the ndis.vxd and ntkern.vxd device could not load the
device driver. I searched my hard drive for these files,
I have the ndis.vxd file, but not the ntkern.vxd and the
Windows ME disc I got with the computer (a Dell) doesn't
have the ntkern.vxd file either. Any idea what I need to
do to fix this?

ntkern.vxd is part of the monolithic vmm32.vxd together with around thirty
other of your device drivers and is not usually present on the system as an
individual file. What exactly is the error message you are seeing?

While I suspect msconfig / Static VxDs will report that ndis.vxd is
installed on your machine, this uptodate WinME box does not have any
ntkern.vxd file.
It is in WIN_20.CAB of the retail OS CD, however.

There is a ntkern.vx_ file which I suspect was renamed during the
upgrade from Win95B to WinME.
I suspect ntkern.vxd was only used under Win95B and later.

So confirm that you are installing the correct WinME driver for your
IEEE1394 card.
Search the vendor's website for an undated driver first.
