I have an old pc with a faulty Hard disk. There is no way to get past the
Win 98 logo. I recall that there is a command prompt that will allow me to
see files which I can then copy onto another drive...I've done this before
but cannot remember the prompt. This computer has now been replaced however
there are some emails and family letters that I would dearly love to
recover.
Help appreciated........

Not getting past the logo is not necessarily a sign that the drive is
faulty--have you tested it with diagnostic software from the maker's web
site? Have you tried booting in safe mode? If the system won't boot in
safe mode but the drive will spin up, you may be able to retrieve data by
temporarily mounting the drive in a PC that is working. Then use that PC's
system to access and transfer data from the old drive using Windows
Explorer. If you need instructions on how to mount the drive, post back and
include the name of the drive.

The drive repeatedly makes a clicking sound at the point when the logo is
displayed. I have tried safe mode...same result. Mounting in another pc was
my last resort as my pc has twin drives which means allot of fiddly work for
an old fellow like me. I was really looking for an alternative option to
dismantling my pride and joy.....

All you have to do is unplug the CDRom drive ribbon cable in the new PC and
attach it and a power cord to the drive that is apparently failing. You do
not have to mount the drive in the new PC--just sit it on its end and see if
you can transfer the files.
