Default Initialized display message then no boot

im trying to revive a dell optiplex gs+ running win 98 and after laborious
booting it finally comes up with the black/white msg "windows has succesfully
initialized this display adapter - go into control panel select settings and
finish configuring or some other verbage to that effect" then it just sits
there with the cursor on the bottom and will not go any further. Is this a
display issue or a corrupt OS issue??
Any help would be appreciated.

Can you boot in safe mode? If so, I'd go to control panel, system, device
manager and delete the display adapter. Reboot and see if Windows will
boot? If so, load the proper display driver.

When I try to boot in safe mode I get no display. The light on the monitor
stays amber. But after I let it do the lengthy boot it gives me the
"initialized the adapter message" I think it gets to the screen where I can
boot to safe mode but I just cant see it.

The "some other verbage" is the important bit, but if it refers to accessing
video properties and enabling the second display adapter then it is telling
you that the monitor is plugged into the second or alternate video display
card and you need to switch the monitor cable to the other VGA connector in
the back of the unit.

Does this system by any chance have two display adapters installed -
possibly one on the motherboard and a separate card as well? If so, remove
the secondary card and also go to the BIOS setup during the boot and be sure
to choose correctly whether the display adapter in the system is AGP or PCI.

You can probably get more information from the Dell web site on what
hardware was included with this system.
