I had a trial version of Windows XP download on my computer and I decided not
to purchase it at this time. How can I delete it from my computer?

We are not sure whether you mean:
1. You have WinXP demo files on your Win98 PC.
If so, just uninstal them via Add/Remove Programs.
2. You have installed on a trial basis WinXP as
your PC's OS. If so, to remove it, use FDISK to
remove all drives in NTFS format, then create new
drives with the Win98 disk in FAT format.

If you upgraded over your previous OS:

If not, please explain how it was installed.

I installed it as a trial basis (WinXP) as my PC's OS I also have Windows 98
that I am using. At startup it asks what system I would like to use - if I
pick WIndows XP it will not let me log in because the trial is over. If I
use the FDisk (is this the disk that came with my computer?) will it remove
everything I have on my windows 98 operating system? I would hate to erase
everything and have to start all over.

Thanks for your response

What you have done is created a dual boot. You have a little work to do in
order to get it back to booting without the boot manager after removing XP.

Wow - who what have thought it would have caused this many problems- do you
think it would be easier to do a complete reinstall of win 98 and reformat?

Thanks for your help

It's actually not that complicated. Are the OS's on the same or different
partitions?

Boot up with a 98 dos startup disk in the floppy drive.
At the A:\ prompt type: sys c: and press Enter.
You should get a message that the system files have been transferred.
It should now always boot to 98.

Remove the boot disk and press ctrl+alt+del to reboot.

Once back in 98 remove the boot files not needed anymore.
Delete these (some Hidden) boot files from the root folder: C:\Boot.ini, Bootsect.dos, hiberfil.sys, ntbootdd.sys, Ntdetect.com, Ntldr, Pagefile.sys (not all are always present).

If they are hidden and you do not see them, open either MyComputer or Explorer.
On the Menu bar click View Folder Options View tab.
Make sure Show hidden files is selected and Hide System files and Hide files with extensions" is not selected.
Click Apply Ok.
Delete the boot files.

If the partition that XP was on is Fat32, go ahead and re-format it to get rid of XP. If it was NTFS you will have to use FDISK to remove the non-dos partition, re-partition it to add it back and format it.

BTW, make sure you have a backup of all your important data/files in case something goes wrong. Even though I don't think there should be an issue, one never can count on it.
