First, let me explain ... I use the BIOS to select between
two HDDs/partitions to boot from ...

The "Allow LPT Interrupt Sharing" option in the "Settings" tab of
"Creative SB16 Emulation" properties is checked for
the "good" HDD/partition (on the same hardware) that
handles "Shut Down" correctly. So, I suspect that
this option is not the cause of the problem in my case.

But, I think you may have touched on the tip of the iceberg ...

I took a look through the Device Manager tab of
the "problematic" HDD/partition (on the same hardware) that
"Restart" instead of "Shut Down" and
the device list does not look clean (there are exclamation points).
Although, things work for the most part.

After comparing the device lists of both HDDs/partitions,
I strongly suspect that the cause of the problem has to with
ACPI BIOS vs. PnP BIOS. The "good" HDD/partition uses
PnP BIOS. And, the "problematic" HDD/partition uses
ACPI BIOS. Anyone know if it is possible to
convert from ACPI BIOS to PnP BIOS? If so, how?

Here is the problematic parts of the device list:

"Shut Down" now works as expected ... solution in my case ...

Replace "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) BIOS" with

Installing Via's 4-in-1 drivers did not fix the exclamations.

Nero InfoTool shows that all drives have DMA=on.

In Safe mode, I was able to fix all exclamations except "PCI bus".
If I try to remove "PCI bus" in Safe mode,
I will get the following two messages:
1) "NAV Auto-Protect:
The configuration files were not found. Using default configuration."
2) "NAV Auto-Protect:
Unable to initialize the exclusion database."

After the above messages, I will not be able to
boot using the partition.

Uninstalling NAV from the partition first gives the same results.

I guess I'll have to live with the one remaining exclamation for now.

Also, my system automatically turns off the computer after
displaying the message:
"It's now safe to turn off your computer."

How can I get it to require the user to
manually turn off the computer?

I guess I'll have to live with the one remaining exclamation for now.

Remove all traces of Norton's software.

Also, my system automatically turns off the computer after
displaying the message:
"It's now safe to turn off your computer."

How can I get it to require the user to
manually turn off the computer?

You would be back to square one as you would have to re-install ACPI
:/

Good suggestion ... I'll try removing the directories/files later.

I'm not sure about this since the "good" HDD/partition waits for
the user to turn off the computer and it does not use ACPI BIOS.

No luck ... I still get the following message (that I forgot to mention before):
"Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."

Only, this time, I no longer get the two "NAV Auto-Protect" messages.

And, the HDD/partition is no longer bootable.

Oh well, I'm off to restore the partition again ...

I'm not sure why this post didn't come through until today ...

Anyhow, the "Restart" instead of "Shut Down" problem was
fixed by replacing ACPI BIOS with PnP BIOS (fail safe).
For details, see my earlier post (dated 11/9/2004 3:12pm).

The following issues remain:
- duplicate "PCI bus" with an exclamation mark (but system works fine)
- system does not wait for the user to turn off the computer on "Shut Down"

I would like to install the following:
System Properties = Device Manager =
System devices = "Advanced Power Management support"

Anyone know how?
