Default Invalid system disk error for ME

The msg wants me to "replace the disk, and then press any
key". I can put in a boot disk and can see all my files
in c: drive. I put in diagnosic cd from dell and ran
scandisk and it says "the fat media byte is missing".

If I typed in "sys c:", I understand that might correct
boot sector, but I DONT WANT TO LOSE ALL MY DATA!

Appreciate any assurance in this procedure

Assuming that your computer is not using any overlay software (and it
shouldn't be), then running 'sys C:' will not affect your data.
