You don't really need anything loading at startup in order to run Widnows. However running without certain startup items is suicidal, comparable to playing Russian Roulette with all chanbers loaded, or to jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. Use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the Startup tab. Compare the list of items that are loading at startup with the following checklist web sites to see what can be safely dispensed with: http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Uncheck.htm http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.htm http://www.3feetunder.com/krick/startup/list.html - has trojan related items listed Note: Please ensure that you fully understand the purpose of a startup item, how and why it was put into the startup, and the consequences (if any) of removing it before you make any changes. Some items are very important for the proper and safe functioning of your computer, including at least one item that is listed twice. Disabling an item by unchecking it in MSCONFIG should only be done for testing purposes or as a "last resort" when no other way of getting rid of the unwanted item can be found. Programs @ start up
Hey ho,
The sccenter has to do with fact that your running a Compaq computer and is not needed. Not to sure as to it's actual purpose. Wkcalrem is associated with Microsoft Works and is the calendar scheduler, if you don't use it, remove it. Msnmsgr will automatically open MSN Messenger when you boot. DirectCD is the drag and drop software for burning CDs, unless you use it alot, remove it from the list as well. Dcfssvc has to do with your Kodak camera or docking station allowing the computer to think the camera/docking station is an actual drive so you can drag and drop pics with it. Cpqeadm, bttnserv, and devgulp have to do with the easy access buttons on your keyboard. Pctvoice has been associated with PCTEL 2304WT V.92 MDC Modems and are bad for CPU consumption. Removing has not known to cause problems. Navapw32 really all depends on the location of the file. If it's stored at C:\Windows\navapw32.exe or C:\WinNT\navapw32.exe, or if your antivirus software is not Norton AntiVirus, then it is almost certain you have the W32.Joot.A@mm virus. But if not then it's yer virus scanner. Winampa is the Winamp player which you don't really need loading when you boot. I was not able to get any info. about Hptztsb05, but feel it may have to do with some sort of Hewlett Packard device you are running, maybe a printer or scanner. As for Qttask, that's the Quicktime player. Motmon is an internet help tool to assist with computer troubleshooting and self-diagnosis, found on Compaq's mostly. Not really needed. I was unable to find any info. about Exec. Loadqm is a bit of a mystery, no one can give a definite answer to it's purpose, but some speculate that is has to do with the Automatic update feature of windows and isnot needed. So there ya go, hope I helped you out. |
