Default Compaq Presario 4526 in win98se

I have this old presario 4526 and still working fine with w95 and I would
like to clean install it with w98se instead. I am concern with the drivers as
hp is telling me that they do not support for w98. At the moment, the DM
gives the following main info:-

The display adatpers : S3 inc Trio 64V2
HD controller: Intel 82371 SB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
Modem : Compaq Presario 336-DFI 56K Upgradeable
Sound : ES1887 Plug and Play
I am concerned that I will not be able to get all the drivers for the w98se.
Can some experienced it help to pin point the drivers that I can actually
download when I make a clean installation of w98se. Hp had said they dont
even have the data base for their 4526. Many thanks for your time.

Does the system have enough processor power/memory/HD space to support 98?

Don't worry about the HD controller, as 98 will install the correct driver
for that during setup. There's a good chance that 98 will have useable sound
and display adapter drivers as well, though installing the latest versions of
those specific drivers would be best.. Finding and installing the correct modem
driver will probably be the most necessary.

Have you tried Google.com ?

Here's one link I found plugging in the sound card information you gave.

Be awrae that most non-OEM driver download sites get their drivers from third
party donors. Scan all downloads with up to date virus definitions.

Ah,,you're in luck. Apparently that particular modem driver is included
with 98 as well.

I was about to reply to your post when I saw that Bill has replied with basically
the same info I was going to send on.....great minds and all that. ;-)

IIRC, the S3 Trio display driver is included with Win98SE, and should be
automatically detected. Likewise the HD Controller. Win98SE also includes drivers
named ESS1887 AudioDrive and ESS1887 Plug and Play AudioDrive, one of which will
hopefully be the driver you need for your sound, and should also be automatically
detected if it is the correct driver.

The modem driver is in the location Bill linked to, on the 98SE CD:
drive:\drivers\modem\compaq
where drive is the actual drive letter of your CD drive. For example, if your CD
drive is drive D:, the path is:
D:\drivers\modem\compaq

From the Readme file in that folder tree, installation instructions:
quote
Compaq Computers Supported: Presario Series: 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, 6000, and the
Armada 1500 with the internal 33.6K or 56K modem.

The modems in the above Compaq computers will not be automatically recognized by the
Windows 98 installation routine. You must follow the steps below once the Windows
98 installation routine is complete in order to properly set up your Compaq modem:

1. Click Start, Settings, Control Panel, double click on the Add New Hardware icon

2. First screen says "This wizard searches for new drivers for:"
Unknown Device
Click Next.

3. Next screen: "What do you want Windows to do?"
Select "Search for the best driver for your device (recommended)", Click Next

4. Next screen: "Windows will search for new drivers in its driver database in:
* Floppy disk drives
* CD-ROM drive
* Specify a Location:"

5. Make sure "Specify a location" is the only box checked, enter
"x:\drivers\modem\compaq" where "x" is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive which
contains the Windows 98 Installation CD-ROM.

6. Next screen: "Windows driver file search for the device:" followed by the name
of your modem; click Next

7. Files are copied, Country Select dialog appears, then next Add New Hardware
screen appears on top. Click Finish.

8. Select country, click Change Country, click Yes.

9. Final screen: "Are all your devices installed now?". Select Yes, click Next.

You may encounter additional dialog boxes if your computer is equipped with
Telephony (Speakerphone, Telephone Answering System, etc.) If you encounter this,
follow the instructions on screen and be sure the location Windows is looking for
files is "x:\drivers\modem\compaq" where "x" is the drive letter for the CD-ROM
drive which contains the Windows 98 Installation CD-ROM.

Hope this is a help, in addition to what Bill has supplied.
