Default 2 Q's....system restore & character map

hi,,,,,
does anyone know where i can get a simple restore point proggy
for win 98? preferably free.
was it first introduced in M.E?

second, does anyone know where the 'character map' is in 98?
I was told it would either be on the Accessories Menu or in System Tools
Menu but i cant see it at all.

System Restore was first introduced in Win ME.
Sorry, but I have not heard of any program that will supply a simple
substitute.

If you don't have Character Map, then install it.
Control Panel-Add/Remove-Windows Setup-System Tools-Character Map
You can also get better character maps like:

Extended Character Map:
ftp://ftp.externet.hu/pub/mirror/sac/utiltext/ecm.zip

Characteristica: http://www.simtel.net/pub/pd/34573.html
(I can't get to that site but Characteristica may available elsewhere)

Okay allan, but surely you jest.

maybe i asked for the wrong thing.
i'm looking for the equivalent to the program that allows you to set
a ' restore point ' .
Is this something that has been put in the too-hard basket?
Surely there is a program out there that can do this; else why would
XP have it as a standard norm if it wasnt important?
I for one know its important as i lost my whole computer for months
due to mishaps and dramas, but a simple restore point could have
taken the computer back to a time when all was well.

anyhow, thanks for the know-how on the character map, i did what you
suggested and will be playing with it.

sorry , but the best thing win98 has is "scanreg /restore" which lets you go
to a previous registry (stores 4 registry backups by default)

one of my "habits" was to get a system up and running the way i like , then
make an image of the drive...so at least i had a good starting point

Buy a spare hard drive (80GB for $45, perhaps)
and use the manufacturers software that comes with it
to create a regular backup of your primary hard drive.

Best you can do in 98 is to create a Registry Backup.

When you want to create a backup just use Start - Run and enter

SCANREGW /BACKUP

Note that this will result in the deletion of the oldest of the 5
existing registry backups. These backups are normally created on the
first bootup of each calendar day by the "Scan Registry" item in the
Startup configuration, and Windows automatically maintains a library
of the 5 most recent backups. Also if your computer is not booted up
on any specific day (e.g. left running 24/7) then no additional
registry backups will be created until the system is rebooted.

Good luck

Once you have a functioning system, especially one close to a clean
install, do a full system backup. If you have multiple partitions, I
guess a backup is a bit more complex. It depends upon the ties between
the Registry & the other partitions, as to whether they must be backed
up concurrently. Also, if you've changed the hardware since the backup,
you may need to change it back before a restore.

Those last two supposedly back up all currently installed drivers, such

report.

okay, i've heard of that before; how do you do it? (image)
also, is it possible to take files off of M.E that relate to Restore Point
and plonk them onto my computer?
