Default PC will not re-set with Recovery CD

On my Compaq PC with ME:

Since I am getting miscellaneous errors while using my PC,
first I tried to "restore" my PC back to an original time,
but restore function always comes back as being
unsuccessful. So, I was told that I should use my Recovery
CD disk to re-set the PC as to how it was when I initially
brought it home.

Although I have used this Recovery CD once before with no
problems, this time instead of first choosing to re-set
the PC back to the factory out-of-box setting, I made the
mistake of choosing a back-up option on the disk. Well,
now, no matter what I try, I keep getting the
message: "Program too big to fit in memory." I wish I
never chose this option. I should just have chose the
factory out-of-box option right away.

I called the place where I have an extended warranty, and
the analyst suggested:
* Re-booting the PC with the Recovery CD in it;
* Unplugging the PC, then holding down the "power" button
for a minute, then plugging it back it with the Recovery
CD disk.

Nothing worked to re-set the PC, since the "Program too
big..." message still appears on boot up when the Recovery
CD is in place. Unfortunately, I can't bring up the
Recovery CD menu again, which I need so I can choose
the "out of box" setting. The analyst on the phone said
he didn't know of any other method to try to re-set the PC.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks.

Since recovery CDs are proprietary to the OEM concerned, in your case Compaq,
and not produced by Microsoft I feel you need to liaise closely with Compaq in
resolving your problems.

As for system restore not being able to restore your system to an previous
checkpoint this is quite likely the result of not having the 290700 patch
installed when you created that checkpoint. Without the 290700 patch no
usable checkpoints will have been created since Sept 2001.
