Default Adware in the Archive problem

If I'm in the wrong group please feel free to redirect me.

I'm unable to remove "Adware" in the C:\_Restore\Archive\FS*.CAB files.
McAfee reports that these so-called "Adware" files are not trojans, viruses,
or worms.

First of all, should I trust this answer?

I must have accepted some Adware as part of a freeware/shareware software
package that I've since deleted. I've deleted the program but I have a few
stubborn "Adware" CAB files that cannot be cleaned by McAfee. Anyone else
have this problem?

Second how do I get rid of these so-called harmless files?

Fine. AV scanners that do so destroy the integrity of the archive making
it unusable

Let's put it another way. They are harmless whilst in that location.

No, since its not a problem, yes, everyone who has ever used Win Me and
deleted a malicious file. The only problem I see is a lack of full
understanding of the working of System Restore and you are by no means
alone in this respect since most of the major AV software houses such as
Symantec and McAfee know even less and are worse than clueless in this
respect.

Second how do I get rid of these so-called harmless files?


If you are confident that your system is currently OK the easiest way to
rid your system of these files is to cycle system restore off and then
back on again. This will flush the store but at the cost of any usable
checkpoints that you might have hence my comment about first being
confident the system is currently OK.

To reset system resto
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and check "Disable
System Restore", Apply and IMMEDIATELY reboot. This will flush you
restore folder and erase all checkpoints, then,
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and uncheck "Disable
System Restore", Apply and again IMMEDIATELY reboot. This should now
automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following the restart.
Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder,
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore
slider to your preferred setting. A figure of 2-300MB is normally more
than adequate for day to day use allowing perhaps a week of checkpoints to
be available although increasing this to perhaps 400-500MB for a few days
during periods of large installs such Microsoft Office is advisable.

There's no need to worry about these files, as whilst they are present only
in the System Restore archive, they cannot harm your PC.
Should you wish to rid yourself of them first try reducing the allocation
for the System Restore archive -
System Properties|Performance|File System
Adjust the bar to the minimum of 200MB, and click Apply, then OK - reboot

See if that clears the affected points,

If not, then you will need to reset System Restore -
To Reset System Restore -
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and check
"Disable System Restore",
Apply, OK, and IMMEDIATELY reboot.
This will flush you restore folder and erase all checkpoints, then,
System | Performance | File System | Troubleshooting and uncheck
"Disable System Restore",
Apply, OK, and again IMMEDIATELY reboot.
This should now automatically create a new checkpoint immediately following
the restart.
Finally adjust the space allocated to the restore folder,
System | Performance | File System | Hard Disk and adjust the restore slider
to your preferred setting.

Most people find that a setting of 200-300MB is sufficient to hold 10-15
days worth of restore points, unless you are doing a lot of
installs/uninstalls, or installing large applications (such as Office).
