Invalid page faults in module KERNEL32.dll while downloading from internet
I began having error messages with my computer every time I
try to download a file or program (any kind of download really) from the internet. I have a Dell OptiPlex GX-1 with Pentium III, 192 mb RAM. I installed a brand new hard-drive recently with a fresh install of Windows 98 SE. Every time I was on internet (dial-up at the time) I had error messages or I couldn't open pages or my Yahoo Instant Messenger would not work. It got so frustrating, I reformatted my drive recently and reinstalled fresh. The only additional programs I have installed so far are Iomega software for my Zip drive, drivers for my Belkin USB PCI card, drivers for Netgear Ethernet card, and especially Norton Internet Security 2003 ed. I just started an SBC/Yahoo DSL account. Every time I attempt to update virus definitions or download a file of any kind, the computer starts to download, gets halfway, freezes, then spontaneously reboots. This happens over and over. I often get a message though that something or other "caused invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.dll at 0187:bff9dfff This occurs even if I disable Norton Firewall. During the last reboot, because it wasn't shut down properly, Scandisk ran in DOS mode and said it found "an invalid long file name but was unable to fix it." I have uninstalled all SBC software not necessary for connection. I haven't run any Windows updates because I can't! It doesn't do me any good to search for updates if I can't download them. Can anyone please tell me what causes this exact page fault in Kernel32.dll?? The program causing the fault varies, but usually are program names related to Norton Internet Security, which I will uninstall if necessary. Often, the "bad" program is MPREXE but I'm not even sure what that refers to. But another problem is this--this error occurred immediately after setting up SBC DSL but before I even installed the Norton programs. I should also mention that I cannot run Scandisk from inside the Windows environment; it always tells me there's not enough memory available. I have run NoAdware and Adaware programs to check for Spyware, but unless there's something really bad that can survive reformatting and repartioning, I don't know how there would be anything on my system already. I just reinstalled Windows 2 nights ago! Also, because the Hope all this detail can help someone to help me. I'm so frustrated I feel like getting a new computer altogether but I can't afford it! I only work part-time and I'm a student. Please help! Sincerely, David |

Invalid page faults in module KERNEL32.dll while downloading from internet
Can I please ask that you split your questions into multiple paragraphs
instead of one really long one. It makes answering/reading very hard. Ok, DEEP breath, here we go.... Problems downloading - most likely corrupt cache. http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree For advice specific to problems with secure sites, have a look at the first link - for general advice, have a look at the second: http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers2.htm#secure_sites http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers.htm#dns You have Norton Internet Security? Yuck. Problems caused by that softwa http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/data/nis.htm starts to download, gets halfway, freezes, then spontaneously reboots. This happens over and over. I often get a message though that something or other "caused invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.dll at 0187:bff9dfff "something or other"? More infomation please. Trouble using Windows Update: http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers.htm#w_update Spontaneous reboots when downloading - corrupt cache/video driver issues: http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_8.htm#deltree http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_5.htm#shuts_down The program causing the fault varies, but usually are program names related to Norton Internet Security, which I will uninstall if necessary. Insufficient information. What is the exact error? Often, the "bad" program is MPREXE but I'm not even sure what that refers to. Again, the precise error message is missing. During the last reboot, because it wasn't shut down properly, Scandisk ran in DOS mode and said it found "an invalid long file name but was unable to fix it." Not an internet problem; best asked in a general discussion group for your operating system. I should also mention that I cannot run Scandisk from inside the Windows environment; it always tells me there's not enough memory available. Operating system issue again. I have run NoAdware and Adaware programs to check for Spyware, but unless there's something really bad that can survive reformatting and repartioning, I don't know how there would be anything on my system already. I just reinstalled Windows 2 nights ago! Have you been on the internet? At all? Do you run a firewall? If the answer to the first two questions is yes, and the last no, then yes you could be infected. -- Hyperlinks are used to ensure advice remains current _______________________________________ Sandi - Microsoft MVP since 1999 (IE/OE) http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/ david wrote: I began having error messages with my computer every time I try to download a file or program (any kind of download really) from the internet.
