Default protection error 89

When attempting to run a utility program just installed on my windows 98
computer I get and error box stating "protection error 89". What is it and
how do I get around it?

Helps if you identify what utility program. Error codes are usually
specific to the program that throws the error.

I was trying to run Almersoft outlook express backup. I am attempting to
transfer email messages from an old windows 98 computer to a new windows xp
computer with this utility program. It loaded fine into the new computer and
runs. I could not download the program from the web into the old computer
without encountering plugin errors. To get around that I copied the program
to a disk from the new computer and loaded into the old computer. But, it
will not run on the windows 98 computer. I only get the protection error 89.

Does the program even support Windows 98 or is it geared towards the NT code
of XP and 2000 and not the 9x code?

you don't want to use the built in FAST (file and settings transfer wizard)
?

For Dan, Almersoft says it works for windows 98. It is specifically designed
to transfer messages from old computer to new.

For Haggis, the reason I am doing this is because the wizard doesn't work.
I don't want to deviate from my orginal question but have been round and
round on this with other support groups and got nowhere. Every attempt to
use the wizard and other methods recommended by MS only results in an error
message "messages can be found or file in use by another application". The
old computer is windows 98, OE version 5, IE ver 4, the new computer is XP,
OE version 6.

IE 4 with OE5? Could be the problem right there. In any case, the
support for Almersoft is minimally documented online. Here's their
support request page.
http://www.almersoft.com/support/

You are simply trying to move messages from an OE5 store to an XP/OE6
system? http://www.insideoutlookexpress.com/backup/

Or, use Find on the old system to locate files with the extension *.dbx.
Use WinZip to archive the entire folder (or folders), take those
archives to the new system, extract the files to a temporary folder or
folders, then use OE6FileImport. To move account info, in Accounts on
the old system, Export each to an IAF file, then import them in the
related panel for OE6.

It appears that the error message is being generated from the library used
in the construction of the application. Without knowing what this library
is you haven't got a chance of tracking it down - the only person who could
interpret it for you is the manufacturer of the software.

However, I would be inclined to suspect that it is being generated for
essentially the same reason that you can't run the FAST wizard.

Using the directions provided to me by other support groups I have managed to
move the *.dbx files from the old computer to a file on the desktop of my new
computer. However, when I try to import them using the OE wizard on the new
computer I get the same old "cannot find messages or file in use by another
application". I will look into the link you provided below. Thanks.

In OE 6, go to FileImportMessages. Choose Microsoft Outlook Express 6
(5, 5.01, 5.5 and 6 all use the same format.) On the next panel, the
default option is to import from an existing Identity on the machine.
Look below that option and choose "Import mail from an OE6 store
directory." Then next panel provides a Browse button. Use that to point
to the directory on your Desktop where you stored the DBX files. The
last dialogue panel will show you the DBX files that are there (they
look just like OE "folders".)
