USB Card/PCI Network Card Conflict??
I installed a 2.0 5 port PCI USB card as an upgrade in my Win 98 SE PC. Now,
when I try to use a usb device through this card and at the same time open my web browser thru my highspeed card, my pc shuts down and reboots to scan disk automatically. I assume there must be a conflict between these two devices although there is no conflict shown in the device manager profile. IF I use the USB card without trying to open my broweser, it appears to work fine as well as if I just open my browser without using the USB card there is no problem. I know this is the problem because if I take the card out, everything returns to normal and I can use the old on board USB ports no problem. PLEASE HELP! |

Also, the IRQs for the network card and the USB card are different and I
tried moving the USB card to a different PCI slot ---no difference. "bgosper" wrote: I installed a 2.0 5 port PCI USB card as an upgrade in my Win 98 SE PC. You've tried all combinations of USB and Network card placements? The
network card *is* a PCI card, right? Or is it onboard? -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP Shell/User "bgosper" wrote in message ... I tried one other slot only, the other few are being occupied. Yes it is PCI.

Is it possible to have the card in and view the Device Manager or does the
computer automatically reset whenever the card is installed? I am trying to say is there any way you can get to normal Windows or even graphical safe mode Windows to access the device manager for a possible driver misinstallation or driver conflict? Well, all I can say is that I'd try other placements. Otherwise, I'd
probably go into Safe Mode Device Manager and remove all USB devices, and all network devices, then restart and let them be reinstalled. Also, check for new drivers for both devices. Consider replacing one or the other with a different model.... The drastic option is to delete the entire ENUM key (where all devices installations are stored), restart and let Windows rebuild the entire Hardware Profile. -- Gary S. BTW, Gary how do you delete the entire ENUM key? Do you mean that when you
are in *graphical* safe mode that you just delete everything? Can you use shift or some other key to do this more quickly? I am not planning on doing this (at least not today -- eg) and I solved my driver problem --- thanks to Jeff Richards - he was able to point out that it was SIS device and I determined that the device was on my motherboard cd and I had to point that ? to the right place on the motherboard cd and install the driver and now everything works fine. : Hopefully, I will not have any more issues on the 98SE side for a while. The XP Pro. side still needs work but I want to have the 98SE side working great and then I will focus more on maintenence on the XP Pro. side of my dual-boot system. Have a great day! "Gary S. I guess I will have to discover it out for myself when I get around to it.
