Default Did recovery erased everything PLEASE HELP!!!

I wanted to full restore my older computer back to it's
original Windows 98 second edition. (I have done it
before) I forgot to disable an extra CD-Rom that I
installed and have had problems ever since.
I did unhook it but now it just boots up and shuts off
and keeps saying many errors including the last one that
says that the vmm32.vxd file is missing and I may have to
reinstall windows.
I do have the recovery disks but it keeps rebooting and
I lose everything and it starts all over again with a
scandisk. I have tried to get to the dos command so that
I can try to recover again but it keeps coming up thar
all the drivers, etc are missing.
How can I fix this problem?? If worse comes to worse, I
do have a windows 98SE disk that come with my Compaq
laptop that has never been opened. (Everything was
already installed) It sayS on the front of the disk that
it is for PCs without Windows. Is it possible to use
this? Or can I just erase all the info on my computer
and use the recovery disks that came with it. I am
referring to the following computer PLEASE HELP ME!!!
HP 8560C desktop
12 GB hard drive
256 mb memory
windows 98SE

Hi,

If it is a VMM32 error then you will have to reinstall windws. Installing
windows from the CD(which you never opened) would be a good option

Regards

Roy

Make sure you have the Code Key. 25 digit string.
You may have to format the drive, through a Boot Disk, to
get 98SE to load.

Not sure that's a good idea if it's the disk for the laptop which most likely has
proprietary drivers.

First make sure you have the Product Key (25 letters/#'s segmented in 5 groups of
5), not the Product ID.
"quote"
Attain Microsoft's Certificate of Authenticity number (also know as the Product Key)
for the Windows operating system. The recovery process may request the product key.
The Certificate of Authenticity is on the cover of the Microsoft Windows book that
was included with your system, or on a small sticker on the side of the HP Pavilion's
chassis.
"end quote"
If you can not find the PK, post back for further instructions on ways to get it if
you have not already formatted. If you already formatted, you will need to contact
MS.
Courtesy of an MVP who's name slips my mind:
"quote"
MS has agreed to issue OEM product keys since the OEMs will not. Contact Microsoft
at: 1 800 642-7676. They will issue retail and OEM product keys after verifying
data located on the W98 CD.

"end quote"

Place the first recovery disk in the CD drive and shut down the machine.
Disconnect all devices from the computer except for the CD drive, monitor, mouse,
and keyboard.
HP mentions waiting 5 secs. before restarting but I would recommend at least 30
secs. to clear any cache. Then follow Step 2 He
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...cname=bph07119

If the above does not work, then you may have to startup with a boot disk and
reformat the drive first.

** TAKE NOTE:** All of the above will reformat the drive and you will lose all of
your important data. Make sure you have backups of your important data if you wish
not to lose it.

If it is truly missing or corrupt, only a reinstall of Windows will
properly replace it. It is only created then, & it is computer specific
in composition.

Do you get to a DOS Prompt? (If not, then hold Ctrl as you boot for the
Startup Menu, & select "Command Prompt Only".) Then enter...

"DIR /a /s C:\VMM32.vxd"

No quotes, but there is a dot before .vxd. This is what you should
see, though it's size does vary...

C:\DIR /a /s C:\VMM32.vxd
Directory of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
VMM32 VXD 941,094 07-22-99 12:21a VMM32.VXD
1 file(s) 941,094 bytes

If you see it in a different folder, it must be moved to
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. But, if it is already there, then

(a) Well, first...
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=311188
Error Message When You Start Windows: The Following File is Missing or
Corrupted: C:Windows\System\VMM32.vxd

(b) If that fails, you must examine the Path statements in MSDOS.sys, to
see they look as follows...

[Paths]
WinDir=c:\windows
WinBootDir=c:\windows
HostWinBootDrv=c:

So...

ATTRIB -S -H -R C:\MSDOS.sys
EDIT C:\MSDOS.sys
Alt-F-X-ENTER (pressed separately) will exit EDIT. (TAB may prove
helpful to navigate buttons. ENTER to accept button.)
ATTRIB +S +H +R C:\MSDOS.sys

Report what you see. If you intend to make no change, you do not need
the "ATTRIB" statements.
