I found it necessary to reinstall Windows 98, but have apparently
misplaced my product key and am stuck there. Is there any legal way to
get around this? Thanks

Find your product key.

If you have not formatted and started over, but have rather just done an
over-install, the key may still be available:

If the system is working in either safe or normal mode:

Open regedit.exe to this key and look in the right pane for the entry ProductKey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion

If the system is not working, start the computer with a floppy startup disk.

At the A: prompt, type:
C:\Windows\Command\Find /N "ProductKey" C:\Windows\System.dat
(Note: ProductKey must be typed in upper and lower case letters as shown and there
is a space after: "Find" after: "/N" and after:"ProductKey"

If that does not turn it up, try this command:
C:\Windows\Command\Find /N "ProductKey" C:\System.1st

If the hard drive has been formatted, contact the maker of the computer if the
system was provided with the computer. If it is a retail version of Windows,
contact Microsoft and see if they can supply you with one.

Or like any "normal/honest" (chose one) computer user, who IS connected
to the web, download a "crack".
It will supply you with working "product keys" from here to kingdom come.

Have fun

Nice, really nice.....not! Downloading "cracks" is one of the best ways to get
infected with malware, not to mention the unethical aspect of it.

Resorted to this kind of solutions when the MS-Help desk, on
international phone line, inquired as a starting note, what IS my VISA
number.
What can be done, I don't have or need this banking service for using PC's.
Bye,bye "Help".
