Slow and Erratic
The problem I have is an erratic running operating
system. The mouse/cursor start running slow and the mouse even a bit jerky. I also have the programs start to slow way down. This whole problem is intermittent so I'm not sure if this is caused by a memory issue or not. I'm running Office XP and WordPerfect Office Suite Version 2002 side-by-side. This machine will work great for hours and then slow way down. Rebooting or even shutting it down and bringing it up doesn't always solve the issue so I'm not thinking this is a memory issue. Any thoughts? Thanks, Steve |

Updated part...
This is looking like the entire machine is just slowing down and the hard drive on one machine has been verified to be running something constantly. -----Original Message----- The problem I have is an erratic running operating system. (Snipped):
"This machine will work great for hours and then slow way down" Sounds like it could be an overheated CPU; I would check to see if the fan is working, free of dust build-up, etc. George "Steve" wrote in message ... Slow and Erratic
Hi Steve,
Check and see how much free disk space there is by going My Computer, right click on the C:\ drive and select properties. A My Documents folder with a very large amount of files can also cause performance problems. Move the files to another folder to test this. I would also suggest doing a virus scan with up to date virus software, then scan for and removing any installed spyware. If you are in need of virus software, here are a couple to choose from, for free. Download the software, and in Update Manager run Update then do a complete virus scan. Free Offer: eTrust EHZ Armor Security Suite from Computer Associates http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/index.cfm Search and destroy any installed SpyWare/malaria/awa Ad-aware is a free multi spyware removal utility that scans your memory, registry and hard drives for known spyware components and lets you remove them safely. After installing Ad-Aware make sure to run the update feature before scanning. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ For large amounts of installed spyware and such, it may be necessary to run Ad-Aware several times to clear them all. Here are a couple more removal tools. CWShredder: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html Download Link: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/CWShredder.exe Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/ SpywareBlaster: http://www.wilderssecurity.net/spywareblaster.html SpywareBlaster doesn't scan and clean for spyware - it prevents it from ever being installed. SpywareBlaster is a non memory resident utility. It works by setting a "kill bit" for the Celsius of spyware ActiveX controls, it prevents the installation of any of them from a webpage. (1) The mouse & keyboard are the ones with moving parts, & they are
"hooked", meaning tasks will run each time you touch one. Therefore, with the computer off, unplug the mouse & hold by it's tail until it may stop spinning & squawking. Also, open & clean the ball & rollers. That is not a design you may see on the rollers-- it is a band of dirt running round the center! Also, unplug the keyboard, turn it round & spank it. (2) If disabling your virus checker's auto-"System" scan, using it's Tray button, leaving the other types on, gives immediate & dramatic relief, I have further info. This supposedly applies to Scan Engine 4.1.60. (3) http://support.microsoft.com/default...51&Product=w98 USB Mouse May Hang When the Computer Is Idle for a Long Time So, if you have "Find Fast", try disabling that. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=199787 OFF2000: How to Turn Off the Find Fast Indexer http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;158705 OFF97: How to Disable the Find Fast Indexer http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;135476 OFF95: Office for Windows 95 Find Fast Indexer Overview (4) For sluggishness in navigating folders: Open Explorer, R-Clk My Documents in the left pane, & select Properties. How many folders does it contain? If it is around 100, try moving them out. Reboot. Is your sluggishness gone? -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Steve" wrote in message ... | Updated part... | This is looking like the entire machine is just slowing | down and the hard drive on one machine has been verified | to be running something constantly. | | | -----Original Message----- | The problem I have is an erratic running operating | system.
