Default NIC drivers for Win 98

Okay....so here's my problem. I am far from a computer wizard so when my
Mom's computer (OS Win 98) wasn't working, I installed the recovery disk
hoping this would fix the problem. As it turned out....there was nothing
wrong with her computer, it was her monitor that wasn't working properly.
Anyway, by re-installing the recovery disk, it bought her computer back to
manufacturer status. Prior to this, she was hooked up to the internet via
Verizon DSL. I try re-installing her verizon from the installation CD and I
get a message telling me it does not detect a NIC. How can this be? She had
been hooked up to the internet via Verizon prior to me messing up her
computer. To make a long story short, they tell me I have to contact HP (she
has an old Compaq Presario 5284) who in turn told me I have to pay $49.99 for
them to help me out. Not that I'm cheap but wouldn't it be more cost
efficient to just buy a new NIC? Or does anyone know where I can download
the drivers she needs so her computer recognizes her NIC? Her network
adapter says: PCI Fast Ethernet dec211430 based adapter.

Sorry this is so long. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanx,

Patty

I'm not even sure if it came with the computer or was added later. The
computer is so gosh darn old and it was my sister's computer beforehand. I
asked her if she still might have any disks at her house for this computer
and she told me she didn't. I looked at that link you gave me and had
checked there already. I also "googled" the name of the adapter came up with
2 different drivers but when it asks you to highlight your OS, Win 98 isn't
even on the list. The earliest version of Windows for the drivers it pulls
up is Windows 2000.

Or does anyone know where I can download
the drivers she needs so her computer recognizes her NIC? Her network

Is that a DEC 21140 or 21143?

Here is one possible driver, hopefully generic:

File Category: Network
OS: Win95 Win98
File Title: DEC 21143 Network Card Drivers
File Version: 5.02
File Date: 20-2-1999 15:26:00
File Size: 255485 Bytes
