Explorer caused invalid page fault in module unknown
Hi all,
I'm having a problem with a customer's machine. It's running Win98SE / IE5.5. Initially the machine hung as soon as the desktop appeared and would go no further. Booting into safe mode and disabling all none-essential items in msconfig allowed the machine to start Windows, but opening My Computer, Recycle bin etc caused Explorer caused an invalid page fault in module unknown at 000:00000001. The machine then hung and required a reboot. Since the machine doesn't have it's own antivirus software (yet!) I've pulled the HDD and scanned it in another machine. A few trojans were found and deleted, but the problem remained. I've managed to install and run Adaware SE by running its setup from a command prompt. It found a number of nasties including (from memory) VX2, and duly removed them, but the problem still persists. I've booted from a floppy and deleted the history, cookies and temp internet folders, but that didn't help either. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! TIA, Rob Ashburn. |

Apart from formatting the C: drive and performing a clean
installation of 98, making sure that any virus protection setting in the BIOS is disabled, because it ruins the setup, you can try running the Repair features in TweakUI: TweakUI 1.33 - The latest version for all versions of Windows from 95 to Me and 2000 - http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstati...ads/PowerToys/ Networking/NTTweakUI.asp Eric, http://www.pcbuyerbeware.co.uk/ http://www.sharedbirthday.co.uk/ -----Original Message----- Hi all, I'm having a problem with a customer's machine. Download/run HijackThis from:

Just a quick followup to this - I downloaded HijackThis and posted the log
to the spywareinfo forums. With a great deal of help from H@ns on the PC Troubleshooting forum the problem now looks to be resolved :-) Thanks to all who posted suggestions! Rob. "Brian A." Glad to hear you followed up on HJThis and resolved the issue. Now so it doesn't
rear it's ugly head again any time soon: All suggested below are free. Get an antivirus app and firewall: http://www.avast.com/i_idt_1016.html www.grisoft.com In case you can not get your machine booted, then the need arises for a DOS based av; http://www.f-prot.com/products/home_use/dos/ ---Don't forget the latest definitions as well from the same download page. http://www.zonelabs.com/store/conten....jsp?lid=ho_za It’s also a good idea to have a HOSTS file to block bad sites, scroll to HOSTS File Manager he http://www.mvps.org/PracticallyNerded/Software.htm Another good app is SpywareBlaster which stops the badboys before they even get a chance to install: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html -- Brian A.
