Default Cannot Find Server or DNS Error Internet Explorer

Hello,

I am attempting to work on a friend's Compac Presario Laptop with Windows ME
and IE 6.0.2800.1106 with 128-bit encription. She handed the laptop off to me
after another friend told her browser had been hijacked.

I have it at home where all I need to do with any computer is plug into my
router and a connection will be found. I'm on a Comcast Broadband Cable
connection. However, when I attempt to access any website form her laptop I
get the message:

"Cannot Find Server or DNS Error"
"Internet Explorer"

I used a program called "Winsock Fix," witch was suggested for this problem
elsewhere on this site, and still cannot access the Internet.
Hopefully someone can assist me in repairing this continuing problem.

Thanks,

Dave

Addendum: Also when I attempt to "release" or "renew" using winipcfg I get
this:

"IP Configuration"
"Error"
"DHCP Server Unavailable: 'Renewing adapter'"

Frank,

Well, I ran "LSP-Fix" and it appears all LSP modules are present.
Still have the same problem as initially explained.

Next? :-)

I am curious, too, about what the solution might be. It is not that I have a
major problem. None of my non-MSFT browsers have a problem. MSIE mostly
doesn't; it took me to http://www.yahoo.com/ readily enough. But it won't
take me to http:/www.icq.mail/. Just the same error you got:

-----------------------------------------
The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.
....
....
Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer
-----------------------------------------

Just the one site; a bunch of other sites that I have tried all work. Still,
the answer may be in older posts; off I go to look.

Another "Duh-oh!" moment; the site I was trying to reach was not
http://www.icq.mail/, rather, it was http://www.icqmail.com/. Since these
servers do not honor cancels, I will now eat some crow, and slip quietly
away to my corner to sulk for the night. :P

However, before I go, I will add this...
I said, I would search the groups. I found this article:
