How do I setup DSL?
How do I setup a DSL Internet connection on Windows Me that uses PPPoE, and
it does not dial any number. My XP system handles everything automatically, all I do is enter a username and password. I have searched the Help and Support, the Microsoft Help pages, and everywhere I can think of in Windows Me, and I cannot find anything useful. Thanks for your help |

I forgot to add that my Network Card does not show up in the list of devices
in Dial-Up Networking. It is fully installed and operational, but I can't selevt it as a device to use in the Dial-Up Wizard |

I thought DSL was an always on type connection? Why do you need it to Dial A
Connection? "MechaSmoke" wrote in message ... How do I setup a DSL Internet connection on Windows Me that uses PPPoE, and it does not dial any number. Windows Me does not have native support for PPPoE as Windows XP has. If you are going to share your Interenet connection with both computers, I strongly recommend that you get a NAT router. Most come with PPPoE capability, so you won't need it on either computer. For just connecting Windows Me, see if you can load just the connection software from your ISP. If you can't find it on the installation CD, you can get PPPoE connection software from the Internet. Enternet 300 is what usually ships with many ISP CDs. But two others are considered better; "RasPPPoE" and "Winpoet". I do not know the best on line source; I use a NAT router with PPPoE. If you install a PPPoE connection manager, it will set up as a Desktop item; I don't recall that it will be added to the Dial-Up Networking list, though. I did have the SBC Enternet 300 when I first activated the account. But I added the router as soon as I knew the connection could be established. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |

It would be natural to look in the Dial-Up Networking list for the connection manager, if one couldn't find it anywhere else. Without a NAT router with PPPoE support, all Windows OSes prior to Windows XP will require installation of a PPPoE connection manager. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |

A better idea is a home router that handles PPPoE for you, for about $30 US. Then it is always on. -- "To know, is to know that you know nothing. That is the meaning of true knowledge." I had been told that Winpoet was better than Enternet 300. Anyway, I concur that the NAT router is the best way to go. I never tried anything different than the Enternet 300 application that my ISP provided. Went to a router as soon as I activated the ADSL service. -- Norman ~Win dain a lotica, En vai tu ri, Si lo ta ~Fin dein a loluca, En dragu a sei lain ~Vi fa-ru les shutai am, En riga-lint |
