Default Safely deleting files in Temp folders

I am still a bit unsure which and how to delet files in
the temp folder of Windows and on my root directory. Even
deleting cookies still has mee a bit unnerved. There are
fat.db files and other suffixed files which mystify this
53 year old user... Any simple assistance to regain Hard
drive space would be appreciated.

The only cookies you need to keep are those for sites you use a password to
access or have customised the view. Otherwise delete the lot.

I'm not going to go into the various locations of temp files and means of
deleting them, except to say 1. you should only delete the contents of
C:\Windows\TEMP immediately after a reboot, but it's then fine to delete
everything in there, and 2. Download and install this to do it for you:
http://www.danish-shareware.dk/soft/...temp2Setup.exe or he
http://tinyurl.com/589gq

When installed, click *Options | Add Predefined folders*. Click *Select All*
then uncheck the Cookies folder(s) and the History folder (if you want to
keep a record of sites you've been to). Apply and Close.

Then select *Options | Program Options* and under *Autostart* put a check
in *Shortcut in Startup folder*, in *Minimise* and in *Clean all and then
close*. You may also want to put a check in *Also empty | Recycle Bin*.

Now every time you boot your computer your temp files will be deleted. The
program works well.

Thank you Shane,

One more piece of information PLS, when these files are
deleted, do the .dat files in the cookies folders get
deleted too?, How about the fat.db files seent in the temp
folders? are they of any relative importance once you
reboot?

Thanks again....

Scotty,

Fat.db files are (apparently) Netscape files. Like the IE Index.dat files,
they're protected. If you do want rid of them (they'll be recreated, but
clean, on reboot) you need to use a dedicated cleaner, of which there are
many. Or you can boot to DOS with a boot disk and manually delete everything
in those folders - but it's far easier to use a dedicated tool. As far as
disk space goes those files are trivial, and Empty Temp Folders won't remove
them.

The only reason for getting rid of either is to clear up your surfing
tracks. If you don't mind having files that retain a record of every web
site you've been to, just leave them be.

I second the vote for EmpTemp. I use it every day on every system. It is
cool, free, easy to set up and use, useful, and intuitive. All of life
should be so sweet.

My rule is: if a file is in a temporary folder, and the computer is idle, I
feel free to delete it. (Don't attempt to delete a Word temporary file, e.g,
when Word is running, even if it is idle.) EmpTemp won't delete read-only,
hidden, or system files, so it's pretty safe to use.

As stated, there are dedicated tools for this sort of stuff. Gipo@MoveOnBoot
(no, that's not a URL) is handy for deleting locked files. You can find such
tools at www.nonags.com, the best freeware site in the universe. I've been a
lifetime member (paying a modest fee for extra goodies) for years. Well,
actually, I only paid the modest annual fee once, but that's a long story.
No, this is not a commercial. I have no financial connection with them.
