Where in the world is Cabinet.exe and Compressed Folders for Win98
I have Windows 98 on another computer. I am trying to download CABINET.EXE
and COMPRESSED FOLDERS for Windows 98 because they are not there. But, I cannot download the files from any website that I know hasn't got viruses. I search at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/ and what? Nothing?! Exactly. Thanks Microsoft Where can I get a copy of these 2 files? |

Where in the world is Cabinet.exe and Compressed Folders for Win98
Cabinet.exe is not a Windows file. In fact, all I find on it suggests that
said file is spyware. The utility in Windows for viewing CAB files is cabview, but it's not an EXE file, it's a DLL. Compressed Folders is not available in Windows 98, only in ME and XP (and Vista, I presume.) Compressed Folders simply shows CAB and ZIP files as folders. -- Gary S. If you run Free Commander, from wwww.FreeCommander.com, zip or rar files can be viewed as though they are ordinary files. This will provide a more useful form of compression since compressed drives in Win9x work only on FAT16 drives & NTFS is not viewable with Win9x which presents a problem for many multi-boot systems. The program provides a Win3.1 style File Manager display with 2 main panes but many added features. Most files, word, excel, power point, open office, star office, .jpg, ..gif, .pdf, etc. can be viewed without extracting the files. Other, not so common, files need to be extracted for use. On a large drive containing many small files I have 700k folders taking 7gigs of drive space when the folder is not compressed. Compressing with the rar format results in disk space taken of just over 700k providing much more effective disk space usage while maintaining drive compatibility across several MS OS's and Upuntu Linux. Windows Explorer in Win9x & 2000pro cannot view a zip or rar file without extracting the file first. James |
