Default Win98SE sees DVD burner as a CD burner

don't know if this is still active forum, hope so.

OS: win98SE, IE 6

Windows no longer recognizes my DVD RW, sees it as a CD drive instead.

I have two optical drives: CD rw and DVD rw.
Everything was working fine last night.

I decided to reinstall packet writing software (INCD).

From the NERO site, I got the latest version. The intallation failed because
of two problems, one had something to do with dcom98 and the other was unable
to load (didn't get the name).

I ran dcom98.exe.
The new INCD would still no install.

I shut down the system.

This morning, upon booting, the BIOS recognizes that there is a CD and DVD
in the computer; as the post is handed off, I now see that windows is looking
at two CD devices, instead of DVD & CD. and tells me two CD devices are
loaded. The message that I could boot windows from either a CD or DVD, now
reads, press key to boot from CD.

After booting into win98se, My Computer shows my opticals as two CD drives.

Blank DVD media put into the DVD, gives its capacatiy as that of a CD. It
will not burn as a DVD.

Often, taking the blank DVD media out of the drive and puting eithe it or a
new blank DVD in the drive, crashes (freezes) the system.

When I try to read a data DVD, according to how it was burnt, I can see its
contents in explorer. But the capacity is listed as being fully used, even
though it isn't.
If it is CDFS format that is trying to be read, it fails. Also, packet
writing data fails.

NERO's info tool, shows that I have a CD and DVD burner installed, ASPI is
working, and all looks the information looks normal and correct.

"System Info" on Windows Start|Programs|Accessories, shows two CD burners.

I removed INCD from the system; that didn't help.

I reflashed the DVD burner firmware. That didn't help.

I removed the opticals and drivers from CP|System|CD Devices. Rebooted. The
"new hardware" was recognized by the OS, but still loaded as two CD burners.

Any ideas on where to start, to fix this?

Thanks, Bob

My PC would not recognize the DVD-CD burner, except as a CD_Rom, until I
installed burning software.
You may have to uninstall ALL your burning software. This would include a
search/files and folders for any reference to the burning program you had and
deleteing what is found after the program uninstall. Check "StartMenu" in
msconfig(System Information) and uncheck any references, if any, to the said
burning program. You need to restart the system.
Then remove the entry of the DVD device out of Device Manager. Do a
complete shutdown.
Start PC and let windows load drivers. If there are specific drivers for
the drive send windows there (Driver file or CD) for them.
Now reload your Burning software.
Hope this helps and you can understand my leads.
