Default Cd rom drive seems to act strange...

I do not know what is wrong with my cd/dvd rom drive on my computer, but
I just want to know if I am able to fix it. I have a Hp XV976 (bought
direct from the store) and it has been running well for five years now.
But the cd/dvd rom drive is acting up. Sometimes it will work fine and
the computer will recognize this drive and the cd burner (which is a
defected one at that), but then if the computer becomes restarted, then
the drives disappear from both hardware and MY computer. But the weird
thing is that the cd/dvd rom does work well, it is just that itwill "go
out" for months at a time and "come back" whenever. I think it may be
software related, but I am not sure. so does anyone have a suggestion?

At the price you can get them these days, I'd replace the drive.
