corrupted : c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd . Type the name of the windows
loader..... Found article 258471 on Microsoft help but it only indicated
what the problem was but did not give detail steps to solve. Help!

Are you reading the same version of the KB that I am? I ask because the
version I am reading includes the following:
"RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, restart the computer with a Windows Millennium
Edition Startup disk, and then perform each step until the problem is
resolved: 1.Modify the WinBootDir entry in the Msdos.sys file to point to
the correct location of the Windows folder.
2.Extract a new copy of the Ifshlp.sys file to the Windows folder and
extract a new copy of the Imagehlp.dll file to the Windows\System
folder. For additional information about extracting files, click the
article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
129605 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/129605/EN-US/) How to Extract
Original Compressed Windows Files
3.If you determine that the Vmm32.vxd file is missing or corrupt, you must
rename the file to Vmm32.old in the C:\Windows\System folder, and then
reinstall Windows Millennium Edition to re-create this file."

I'd forget about 1) but carefully read 2) and before attempting to
reinstall Win Me I would look into replacing your existing copies of
ifshlp.sys and imagehlp.dll and seeing if this fixes the your problem.
Turning to 3) you can check whether the file vmm32.vxd is still present by
booting to DOS using a Win Me boot floppy and at the DOS prompt enter:
DIR C:\vmm32.vxd /s
and then click Enter
This should report that the file vmm32.vxd is present and located in the
C:\Windows\System folder, if not then you are almost certainly going to
have to reinstall Win Me.

I could not find the missing file so I am tiring to install ME over the
existing ME system but I am stopped in windows setup when I get message
SU0168 : Your computer already has an operating system installed which can
not be upgraded by this version of setup. You need to obtain the windows ME
upgrade. I'm using the system restoration disk that came with my computer.
Anything I can do short of deleting everything on the drive and
reinstalling ME?

I'm using the system
restoration disk that came with my computer.

Since only you know what model PC you are using and what the instructions
were that came with the restoration CD I would suggest you start there.
Microsoft don't produce restoration disks, these are produced by PC
manufacturers and vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and model to
model.

As for carrying out an in place reinstall, that is reinstalling Win Me
over an exiting version, this works if using Win Me media or the Win Me
setup files and cab set but is subject to a number of caveats including,
if the system has been upgrade to IE6 or WMP9, the removal of certain
files before attempting any reinstall.

You don't need to get ME to run to be able to reinstall it - read the
article again - you can run the setup command from a floppy boot.

Yes, you could probably install XP over the existing system - but whether it
would retain your data would depend on the exact corruption it encounters. -
either way, it'd be best to back up your data first.
